Last Aero Push: Takaaki Nakagami to Debut Honda’s Final 2024 Fairing at Indonesian MotoGP
"Carry-on baggage": Takaaki Nakagami is set to receive Honda's latest aerodynamic update for the 2024 model this Saturday in Mandalika.
Takaaki Nakagami is set to debut Honda's newest aerodynamic package this Saturday at the Indonesian MotoGP.
Honda's final fairing homologation of the season, which featured updated aerodynamics, was the most notable enhancement introduced during the recent test at Misano.
Despite Nakagami's participation in testing the aerodynamics alongside the other three Honda racers, a shortage of components has prevented him from utilizing it in an actual grand prix event so far.
However, the LCR Honda racer, transitioning to HRC testing responsibilities in 2025, anticipates that Friday's practice session in Mandalika will mark his final use of the current fairing.
Nakagami stated, "Our goal for Saturday is to get approval for the new fairing that the other three riders are already using."
"Regrettably, we were unable to obtain it by Friday due to the very tight schedule."
HRC has confirmed that they will deliver it here in their hand luggage on Friday afternoon, and it will be ready by Saturday morning.
"This is a positive development. On Friday, we can take advantage of the two sessions to get a grasp on the basic fairing and bike setup. Then, on Saturday, we can test out the new fairing and observe the changes."
Last Sunday at ‘Misano 2,’ Joan Mir and Luca Marini achieved Repsol Honda's top performance of the season, finishing in eleventh and twelfth positions respectively.
Nakagami expressed his interest, stating that he had already tried out the aero during the Monday test in Misano and found it to have some clear benefits. However, he noted that they were unable to utilize it in Misano 2.
"However, at Misano 2, the other three riders had already tried it over the weekend and all provided positive feedback regarding the turning phase. It’s not a huge leap forward, but we’re definitely making progress."
"Let's take a moment to comprehend the new fairing, especially for my own benefit, in case I need to adjust or alter my technique. I still lack sufficient data from the Misano test."
"However, this will be the final approval and specification for this season."
"We'll aim to make progress step by step, whether it's with each session or each race. Additionally, we're focused on preparing the optimal setup for my home Grand Prix, which holds great significance for me."
Next weekend at Motegi will be the last home grand prix for the 32-year-old as a full-time racer.
Nakagami finished eleventh in the challenging, slippery conditions at the Aragon Grand Prix, matching Mir's best result for Honda this season.
