Karun Chandhok Assigns Majority Blame to Sainz for Baku Collision with Perez
Specialists have attributed fault for the collision between Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz.
Responsibility has been assigned following the crash involving Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez.
According to Karun Chandhok, Carlos Sainz should be held primarily responsible for the collision with Sergio Perez that concluded the race in Baku.
In the final lap of the F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Ferrari’s Sainz and Red Bull’s Perez both experienced crashes.
Their battle for a spot on the podium concluded with both vehicles crashing into the barrier.
Charles Leclerc, who was in second place, initially defended against Perez’s attempt to overtake him.
Chandhok reviewed the replays for Sky Sports, noting, “Leclerc held the inside position going into the first turn, which forced Perez to the outside."
"Carlos then accelerates, building speed, as he approaches Turn 2. He considers overtaking his teammate from the outside."
“Carlos misses the apex, while Checo stays on the racing line where there is more grip.
"Carlos is now struggling with his exit, while Checo is gaining momentum."
“Carlos is positioned along the white line next to the wall, while Checo is situated in the center of the track.
“Carlos is moving toward the center, and that’s where they meet.”
"It is instinctive for a race car driver to steer clear of the barrier."
"Carlos is gradually moving inward, drifting away from the white boundary, straying off the path."
“By examining the onboard footage, we can determine the direction in which the drivers are focusing their attention.
Right before the moment of impact, Sainz glances in his mirror and notices Perez.
“Regrettably, Carlos seems to need to shoulder more of the responsibility."
"They were very near each other, and it's an area where you wouldn't typically anticipate something going wrong. You would also assume the other driver would get out of the way."
Officials looked into the matter but chose not to pursue any additional measures.
Perez’s failure to finish the race resulted in a significant loss of points for Red Bull in the constructors’ championship. Consequently, they have been overtaken by McLaren, following Oscar Piastri’s win in Baku.
Perez also missed a unique opportunity to outpace his teammate, Max Verstappen.
