Jorge Martin Weighs In on Controversial Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon MotoGP Crash: A Boost to His Championship Hopes
Jorge Martin shares his thoughts on the collision between Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez at the Aragon MotoGP
Jorge Martin has expressed his viewpoint regarding the incident involving his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's hopes for the championship received a significant boost during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his ongoing remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia suffered a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings. This gap was due to Bagnaia's victories in both the Sprint race and the Grand Prix in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin secured two second-place finishes, continuing his streak of placing second in every race since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race collision with Alex Marquez. Despite a sluggish start, Bagnaia was making his way up the ranks and caught up to Marquez's rear tire with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. As Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, the two collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was visibly hesitant to take a definitive stance.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You should inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Undoubtedly, visibility was a challenge due to the dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't tilt further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2 when he crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez, resulting in an eventual collision."
"I hope they're alright, as it looked like they were near the motorcycles after the accident. I wish them well for the upcoming race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed that no bones were fractured. However, the Italian mentioned he was experiencing discomfort in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is scheduled for this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury sustained from a crash during the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year he will have just a week to recover from the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Bagnaia has previously secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, but it was Martin who emerged victorious in both 2023 races. This year, the Spaniard heads into his competitor's home event with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
