Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon Collision Amid Championship Surge
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident between his championship contender Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin improved his chances in the championship during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, maintaining his impressive performance as Francesco Bagnaia suffered a fall.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit in the World Championship, following Bagnaia's triumphs in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
However, Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, which coincided with Martin securing two more second-place finishes. Martin has consistently finished in second place in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's eventful weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a shaky start, Bagnaia worked his way up the field and found himself right behind Marquez with only seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. As Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, the two riders collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was noticeably hesitant to take a firm stance.
"It's challenging," Martin commented. "You ought to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Definitely, it was hard to see because there was a lot of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn’t lean any further, similar to what happened with Joe Roberts in Moto2 when Roberts crashed on the last lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was contact."
"I really hope they are alright because it looked like they were near their bikes after the accident. I’m wishing they’ll be fine for the upcoming race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center, where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
This weekend, the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will host the next MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race despite suffering a leg injury from a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year he will have just one week to recover from the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia's two previous victories in the MotoGP class at Misano, it was Martin who claimed victory in both races in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider heads to his rival's home race with a 23-point lead in the championship.
