Marc Marquez Triumphs at Aragon: The Emotional Journey to a ‘Perfect’ MotoGP Weekend Victory
Marc Marquez admitted he "put pressure on himself" to achieve a flawless performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He revealed that during the Sprint race, he wasn't having fun because he understood the significance of the day.
After nearly three years without a win, Marc Marquez broke his dry spell at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, calling it a "perfect" weekend.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second lead, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session that Marquez didn't lead was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night through Sunday morning, as he didn't record a lap time.
Marquez described the weekend as flawless during the post-race press conference. He mentioned that they dominated all sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and the team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated over nearly three years without a win, and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th top-class victory.
"In the race, we experienced an incredible sensation right from the start," he stated. "It was an extremely lengthy race, and managing my emotions in the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3-4 kilograms."
"With each step, the weight on my back grew heavier and heavier. Achieving this victory felt unbelievable, and I instantly began reflecting on the entire journey, thinking about everyone who supported me, including my family, my girlfriend, and my brother Alex Marquez."
“They provided significant assistance, and the Gresini team, in particular, gave me a chance. I approached it as a novice rider, aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and will continue to push forward.”
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate various matters in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he remarked. "But more than just the podium, it's the Gresini garage that's always joyful and lively, constantly feeling like a celebration."
"Beyond everything else, the primary factor was the people surrounding me. In times of extreme difficulty, when you're in a profound predicament, having a genuinely compassionate and supportive team who feel your pain even more intensely than you do—that's what made all the difference."
“It was an unusual celebration as the energy and excitement were greater in past races where we celebrated second or third places. Today, it was more about feeling emotions rather than experiencing a rush of adrenaline.”
After leading all the sessions except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez conceded that he was under some pressure to finish his weekend with a Grand Prix win.
"Today, I felt a lot of self-imposed pressure," he mentioned. "Yesterday during the Sprint, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware that today would be crucial and I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"Therefore, I aimed to stay focused. When you have speed, it appears you can handle the situation, remain steady, and act intelligently; but fundamentally, you're the same person. Without speed, however, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to stay competitive with the leading racers."
Marquez views this victory as comparable to his 2021 German Grand Prix win, which marked his first triumph following an arm fracture at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on par with 2021 in Germany."
"When a team faces numerous injuries and is going through a tough period, the significance of their wins is heightened."
While it’s a fact that I secured 60 wins, those two specific triumphs, along with my initial MotoGP victory, hold the greatest significance. They boost your self-assurance in a unique manner and provide an additional layer of confidence.
"I hadn't felt well for a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding; it felt effortless, and I was in the zone but very focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite this being Marquez’s 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed a win was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, I came to understand that a race win is on the horizon," said Marquez. "It was there that I saw we will have our chances. Competing for the championship is a different matter, and for that, we must continue to put in the effort."
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it was only a matter of time before it would happen."
