Honda Secures MotoGP Evolution with Strategic Signing of Romano Albesiano for 2025: Aleix Espargaro and Peers Laud the “Intelligent” Move
Aleix Espargaro praises Honda's new technical chief for the significant progress of Aprilia
In 2025, Aleix Espargaro will join forces with Romano Albesiano at Honda.
Honda's team members have lauded the acquisition of Romano Albesiano as its MotoGP technical director for 2025, with the soon-to-be test rider Aleix Espargaro referring to it as a "smart" decision.
On Friday, during the Japanese Grand Prix, Honda shocked everyone by announcing that they had secured Albesiano from Aprilia to lead the development of the RC213V.
By evolving the Aprilia from being the grid's least speedy motorcycle into a championship-contending vehicle, which has recently drawn in a top-tier talent like Jorge Martin for the 2025 season, Albesiano’s acquisition is viewed as Honda's most impactful decision in recent times.
Espargaro, having collaborated with Albesiano at Aprilia since 2017 and set to join him in HRC's testing squad in 2025, spearheaded the commendations for Honda's choice.
"Espargaro commented on the switch to Honda, stating that it was a smart decision to sign him, especially as Italian engineers and European factories have been making significant advancements."
"This significantly aids Honda and their team of engineers from Japan."
"The transformations he has made to the RS-GP with his innovative concepts are truly impressive. It also brings me joy to see Romano doing well."
Becoming the chief technical director at the largest factory, known for its remarkable legacy in the championship, is a tremendous honor.
"I'm incredibly excited and eager to embark on this new adventure.
"I'm aware of Romano's participation in Aprilia's test team, which makes me realize the significance of my position.
"Having Romano in the garage will be amazing for me, and collaborating with him is something I'm looking forward to because of the immense respect I have for him and our strong relationship."
Honda team member Joan Mir shared Espargaro's views, highlighting that Aprilia has previously faced the same challenges that Honda is experiencing now.
"The 2020 world champion believes this decision is crucial as having someone like Romano, who brings a wealth of experience from his time at Aprilia, onboard is essential. He pointed out that Aprilia's circumstances in the past were quite comparable to the current situation at Honda."
"He proceeded ahead, and together, they crafted a bike designed for competition."
"He has some understanding of the necessary actions."
"Given his role, alongside the Japanese team members, technicians, and engineers who are all highly skilled, having a European member on board to expedite our evolutionary progress is essential for us."
LCR's Johann Zarco stated that Albesiano's involvement would enhance the already "exceptional quality of work" that Honda's Japanese engineers deliver.
"The Frenchman expressed his belief that the Japanese possess an extraordinarily high standard of work."
"Occasionally, certain choices require a substantial amount of time to make, which is why there are occasional delays in the development process."
"Incorporating new perspectives from a European individual could inspire and motivate the Japanese to undertake more significant transformations, while leveraging the diligent efforts of the Japanese."
