Helmut Marko Mocks McLaren’s ‘Sportsmanship’ After Costly Italian Grand Prix Strategy Blunder
Helmut Marko taunts McLaren with a “sportsmanship” remark at the Italian Grand Prix, saying, “I value that, and it slightly improves our circumstances.”
Helmut Marko humorously expressed gratitude to McLaren for their "sportsmanship" following their loss of the Italian Grand Prix F1 race win.
McLaren is currently only eight points away from Red Bull in the Formula 1 constructors' championship standings.
The Woking team might have been at the top of the leaderboard after Monza if they had achieved a first and second place finish.
Nevertheless, opting for a two-stop strategy for Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris proved to be an expensive decision.
This enabled Charles Leclerc to seize the race lead and maintain it using a one-stop strategy.
By finishing in third place, Norris managed to cut Max Verstappen’s lead in the drivers’ championship by just eight points, which now stands at a 62-point advantage heading into the Azerbaijan race.
In an interview with the Dutch newspaper de Telegraaf, Marko rejected the notion that it was a "disappointing result" and went on to ridicule McLaren.
"A disappointing outcome? Definitely not," he remarked. "We anticipated this to some extent and I want to applaud Ferrari for their win and express gratitude to McLaren for their fair play."
"I am grateful for that, and it improves our circumstances slightly."
Red Bull had a tough weekend as Verstappen managed to secure only a sixth-place finish.
Finishing in sixth place marks his poorest performance on the track since the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in 2022.
Due to Red Bull's significant difficulties, they face a serious risk in both championship standings, especially with the upcoming races in Baku and Singapore, which are not anticipated to favor their performance.
The positive update for Red Bull is that they have a month-long break before the series of races in America, providing them with valuable time to possibly discover ways for Verstappen to secure his fourth world championship this year.
Marko is optimistic that Verstappen will keep being a key player in 2024.
"He emphasized that Max remains the top driver both mentally and in terms of quality."
