Mercedes disclosed that Lewis Hamilton penned a personalized handwritten message for Andrea Kimi Antonelli before his first Formula 1 race in 2025.
After a 12-season tenure with Mercedes, the seven-time world champion Hamilton is moving to Ferrari next year, marking a significant shift to a rival team. The 39-year-old British driver delivered an exceptional performance in his last race for Mercedes, rallying from 16th place to finish fourth at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which concluded the season.
In a unique installment of the F1’s Beyond The Grid podcast, Stephen Lord, the Mercedes race team co-ordinator, shared details about Hamilton’s poignant farewell to his driver room after the final European season race in Monza.
"Lord shared a fascinating perspective on Lewis that might not be commonly observed," he commented. "This occurred following the Monza race, notably the final European leg of the series. Lewis was on the upper floor engaging in the engineering debrief."
In Europe, our race headquarters feature an engineering hub located on the highest floor. Directly behind this area, there are private spaces allocated for our drivers. These rooms are equipped with massage beds and all their gear is meticulously prepared and displayed. Additionally, they have access to a personal bathroom, complete with a shower and toilet facilities.
Lewis had completed his engineering work. I believe the other engineers had already departed, leaving Lewis alone in the upstairs room. I went up, picked up a few things, returned downstairs, and then Lewis came down, prepared to depart for home.
He reached the base of the staircase and paused before deciding to return upstairs. My initial thought was that he had left something behind, but I didn't dwell on it. Roughly 10 minutes later, he descended again and this time, he approached Carlos, the team's Head of Race Team Logistics, and took him aside.
"It was evident that Lewis was deeply moved, as he embraced Carlos and expressed, 'I've just realized, this is the last time I'll ever see that room. It's hitting me hard. I don't want to go. It's bittersweet leaving that room behind after all these years, knowing I'll never return.' His departure from the room clearly had a significant emotional impact on him."
A Remarkable Message for Kimi Antonelli
Hamilton's position at Mercedes will be taken over by the 18-year-old prodigy Antonelli, who is set to join George Russell, forming a revamped driving pair for the Silver Arrows starting in 2025 and into the future.
Lord disclosed that Hamilton had written Antonelli a heartfelt message, which will be placed in the Italian's driver room starting next season.
"He entered the room and noticed a lengthy, hand-written message on the wall," he mentioned. "It was addressed to Kimi, essentially greeting him to his new quarters and offering good wishes. It conveyed heartfelt sentiments about the team, emphasizing that if he showed them regard, they would reciprocate because they are an outstanding group."
"I was struck by the thought, 'how kind of them to do that.' And indeed, we've had the glass trimmed and it's presently encased in the room, ensuring it remains there indefinitely. I figured I might as well step into the bathroom."
I entered the restroom and noticed, right beside the toilet and over where the toilet paper is kept, the words 'Lewis was here' accompanied by a large grinning emoticon. My reaction was, 'alright, I'm into it.' However, the message left for Kimi was truly exceptional.

Dall'Igna expressed during this week's team unveiling that improving upon last year's performance seems complex and potentially unattainable.
"Undoubtedly, we have the capability to enhance our performance in order to successfully attain our primary objectives of securing victories in both the riders’ and constructors’ championships."
"Thus, surpassing last season's performance is not the priority. The primary goal is securing victories in both championships."
Last year, Ducati experienced defeat in only a single grand prix, with its riders regularly dominating the podium spots and securing the first four places in the global championship rankings.
The manufacturing team clinched the constructors' championship, outpacing their closest competitor, KTM, by a vast gap of 395 points, effectively doubling their score.
The official squad is welcoming six-time top-tier champion Marquez and two-time winner Bagnaia to their ranks. However, Ducati faces the departure of the freshly minted champion Jorge Martin, as well as race victors Enea Bastianini and Marco Bezzecchi.
Pramac's transition to Yamaha will also decrease the number of Desmosedicis on the grid to six.
However, the pair from Ducati Lenovo are evidently the front-runners for the championship title before the season starts

Albert Valera, the manager of the 2024 MotoGP champion Jorge Martin, asserts that Martin is unaffected by ego issues and remains unbothered by remarks concerning Ducati's roster for 2025.
Martin was on course to be part of Ducati's official team this year, but the company decided to change its plans, opting to elevate Marc Marquez to the position after he declined a top-tier motorcycle at Pramac and hinted at moving to a competitor.
As a consequence of joining Aprilia, Martin subsequently secured the 2024 championship while riding for Pramac-operated Ducati.
Ducati acknowledged that parting ways with Martin was a difficult choice, and in recent times, Gigi Dall’Igna has referred to Marquez as “a superior rider”.
In reply to this, Valera conveyed to Motorsport.com, “Ego issues aren't a concern for us.
Having an excessive ego can cloud your judgment and disrupt your sleep, leading to wasted time spent in anger over remarks such as this.
"However, if there's a cyclist who remains unaffected by such matters, it's Jorge, and this fact brings me a lot of peace."

"He has never sought acknowledgment as the primary rider for Aprilia; instead, he understands the importance of having a capable teammate to jointly advance the project."

Indeed, this remains the case. The MotoGP season concluded officially on November 19 after the test in Barcelona. Meanwhile, Formula 1 continued until the second week of December. The MotoGP season is set to kick off in a little over a month in Thailand, with Formula 1 starting its season a few weeks afterwards in March. Together, the two premier global motorsport series have planned a total of 46 races for the year 2025.

However, as we approach 2025, there's a level of anticipation we haven't felt in quite some time.
It's undeniable that Formula 1 hasn't witnessed a truly captivating fight for the drivers' championship since the 2021 season's chaos, with Red Bull and Max Verstappen securing four consecutive titles. Although they faced some competition in the latter part of the previous year, their early success in clinching seven out of the first 10 races made the final result foreseeable.
The excitement of MotoGP's championship fights has stretched to the final races for three consecutive years. However, the anticipation surrounding these contests has often been underwhelming. The 2022 championship fight between Francesco Bagnaia and Fabio Quartararo didn't live up to expectations, primarily because Bagnaia took advantage of Yamaha's dwindling performance. Furthermore, the recent showdowns between Bagnaia and Jorge Martin are unlikely to be remembered as some of the most thrilling championship duels in the sport's history.
Without diminishing the accomplishments of others, the allure of a star athlete plays a crucial role in the story of any championship. Valentino Rossi's initial quintet of top-tier championships saw him winning with ease, yet it was his charisma that stole the show. His character, competitive clashes, and victory celebrations enthralled fans everywhere.

While he might have secured a seventh championship, the certainty of such achievements was waning, and the intrigue of his response to these challenges was a compelling reason to continue following his journey.

The trajectories of Marquez and Hamilton in their respective racing domains share notable similarities. Hamilton had already made a name for himself upon entering Formula 1 in 2007, closely followed by Marquez's own impressive debut in the 125cc World Championship in 2008. Their ascent to the top was both swift and captivating, mirroring each other's progress in their early careers.
In 2013, Marquez entered the MotoGP for the first time, coinciding with Hamilton's much-debated transfer from McLaren—where he secured the world championship in 2008—to Mercedes, a team that had managed only one grand prix victory since acquiring the erstwhile Brawn GP team in 2010. Nonetheless, that year signaled the beginning of a dominant era for both athletes.
Naturally, Marquez claimed the world championship title in his debut season. With the introduction of F1's hybrid engines in 2014, Hamilton secured his second championship as Marquez also clinched his second title. The introduction of new ground effect regulations in F1 for the 2022 season left Mercedes at a disadvantage, leading to a two-season victory drought for Hamilton. After making a comeback in 2021 with three victories, Marquez had to take a significant break in 2022 to undergo his fourth surgery, which involved repositioning the bone in his arm to its original alignment.
Entering 2023 in top form, Honda supplied him with an underperforming motorcycle, resulting in only a single podium finish. Faced with slim prospects of improvement from Honda for 2024, he terminated his contract with the team ahead of schedule to move to Gresini Ducati for the 2024 season. Similarly, at the beginning of the previous year, Hamilton chose to conclude his extensive agreement with Mercedes before the season began, opting to secure a contract with Ferrari for 2025.
In 2024, Marquez triumphed in races once again, marking his first victories since 2021, while riding a Ducati from the previous year. Similarly, Hamilton ended his winless streak that had persisted since that same time.
In 2025, both athletes will don red gear – Hamilton will join Ferrari, while Marquez will be part of the official Ducati team – as they aim to further their illustrious careers after bouncing back into top form last season.
The completion of Liberty Media's purchase of MotoGP is currently delayed due to an investigation by the European Union. Bagnaia grinned during a shared interview in the mountainous area, stating, "We had a great time skiing."
Marquez mentioned, "Before the alarm went off, I knew I was going to lose the race!"
Typically, skiing isn't something I do! I've hit the slopes around 10 times throughout my life.
"I began learning to ski at a relatively older age, around 23 or 24, purely as a pastime."
Marquez humorously revealed details about his latest agreement with Ducati Lenovo.
"In fact," he pointed out, "the agreement explicitly prohibits skiing!"
"However, everyone is okay, so feel free to speak up!"
"We had a great time participating in a sort of race, which we found immensely enjoyable. As it went on, we noticed we were improving significantly."
At the unveiling of the 2025 motorcycle in Italy, the atmosphere was light-hearted between Ducati's leading rider Bagnaia and the much-anticipated new addition, Marquez.

In their initial joint media appearance, the two racers maintained a friendly demeanor, despite having previously encountered on-track disputes during the 2024 season, including a contentious incident at the Portuguese Grand Prix and a direct competition for the win at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Held at the Madonna di Campiglio and led by TNT Sport commentator Gavin Emmett, Marquez and Bagnaia discussed various subjects.
One of the highlighted moments involved a popular photo of the duo from 2010, during a time when Marquez was competing in the 125cc category and Bagnaia had not yet entered into the realm of grand prix racing.
"Bagnaia recalled, "That day remains vivid in my memory."
"The period marked his inaugural championship victory. That day is etched in my memory. At that point, we had attended perhaps the second or third trial of the season alongside the Monlau Competicion squad in Barcelona, and Marc was present, engaged in his supermoto training exercises."

In his third year competing in the 125cc category, Marquez clinched the championship riding a Derbi, achieving this feat with 10 wins under his belt. Following this success, he ascended to the Moto2 class in 2011.
In response to inquiries about the photograph, Marquez stated, “I couldn’t recall the specific day in question, but I am aware that he was competing under Monlau, and I shared a close bond with Monlau Competicion.
"I couldn't recall the specific day."
Marquez attended the event to back his younger sibling, Alex Marquez, who was participating in trials with the Monlau Competicion squad.
In 2013, the same year Marquez entered the MotoGP class and clinched his first premier class championship, Bagnaia made his entrance into grand prix racing.

In their initial joint interview, the duo showed a friendly demeanor despite having previously collided on the circuit during a contentious encounter at the Portuguese Grand Prix in 2024, and once more fighting neck and neck for the win at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Held at Madonna di Campiglio, the discussion was moderated by TNT Sport's Gavin Emmett, where Marquez and Bagnaia addressed various subjects.
A photo that went viral of the duo dates back to 2010, during a time when Marquez was competing in the 125cc category, and Bagnaia had not yet entered the realm of grand prix racing.

Marquez secured the 125cc championship riding a Derbi, claiming the title during his third year in the category with a total of 10 race wins, subsequently moving up to Moto2 in 2011.
In response to inquiries regarding the specific photograph, Marquez noted, "The details of that day are a bit hazy to me, but he was competing under Monlau's banner, and my connection with Monlau Competicion was quite close.
"I couldn't recall the specific day."
Marquez was present to back up his sibling, Alex Marquez, as he too was participating in trials with the Monlau Competicion squad.

Marco Bezzecchi Aims for MotoGP Comeback by Emulating Champion Jorge Martin
Marco Bezzecchi plans to look up to Jorge Martin as a benchmark.
"I intend to emulate everything he excels at more than I do."
Italian rider Marco Bezzecchi, who had been swiftly climbing the ranks in MotoGP, faced an unexpected slowdown in 2023. That year, he secured just one podium finish and fell to twelfth place in the world championship standings.
Bezzecchi, who had won three races and was only outperformed by Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin in the last season, acknowledged that his drive was affected due to difficulties in maintaining competitiveness on the GP23.
Last season at VR46, Bezzecchi expressed difficulties with the initial acceleration, saying the motorcycle failed to turn properly, causing him to lose speed and frequently veer off course.
"Every GP23 Ducati racer has been voicing the same concern. There are certain circuits where I managed to adapt somewhat, while others posed more of a challenge for me."
Luckily for Bez, Aprilia considered the previous season an anomaly and brought the 26-year-old on board to team up with newly crowned world champion Jorge Martin in its official squad.
At last November's test in Barcelona, Bezzecchi made his first appearance on the RS-GP, finishing in 13th position, only a tenth of a second behind Martin.
Most significantly, considering the difficulties with cornering experienced last year, Bezzecchi instantly felt assured about the front-end performance of the bike.
During the Aprilia team launch event, Bezzecchi shared his thoughts, saying, "My initial day in Montmelo was enjoyable. I quickly felt comfortable on the bike."
"The most notable change was the incredibly stable front end. This is a hallmark of Aprilia bikes, known for their exceptional steadiness. The motorcycle instantly provided me with strong confidence when braking in a straight line."
"The experience was unlike that of riding a Ducati, which has a distinct setup. As a result, the motorcycle responds differently when braking."
"The method of riding the Aprilia is entirely distinct, so I'll have to adjust gradually with each lap. However, that was the most significant difference."
Both Bezzecchi and Martin have dedicated their entire careers in the top class to competing with Ducati.
The Spanish rider received comprehensive factory backing while at Pramac. However, he faced a challenging period, failing to secure any victories in 2022 and missing out on a position with the factory team to Enea Bastianini.
Nevertheless, Martin made a remarkable comeback by competing for the title in 2023 and managed to handle the stress of leading the world championship for the majority of the previous year.
Bezzecchi admits that he has much to gain by observing Martin both during races and in other aspects.
"To begin with, his speed is incredible. He can achieve astonishing speeds in no time," Bezzecchi noted. "Whenever he gets on the bike, he consistently demonstrates impressive swiftness."
"It will be crucial for me to use him as a model, examine his statistics, observe how he performs within the penalty area, and attempt to emulate everything he does better than I do."
"He holds the title of world champion, making him the strongest competitor right now."
Besides his impressive biking abilities, he possesses a strong work ethic. His training regimen is excellent, and he consistently demonstrates high levels of focus and motivation.
"I’m driven as well, but maintaining this drive for every race can be challenging during difficult periods. Last year was particularly challenging for me."
He went through challenging periods before. He was forced to entirely alter his plans. Nevertheless, he maintained a resilient mindset and unwavering determination.
"This serves as a clear example of Jorge's superior strength. I plan to follow his lead and use him as a benchmark to enhance my own abilities."
Bezzecchi and Martin are set to return to the track with the RS-GP25 during the Sepang test scheduled for February 5-7.
