Google Triumphs in EU Antitrust Case, Overturning €1.5 Billion Fine: A Setback for Vestager’s Crusade Against Silicon Valley
Google triumphs in European Union advertisement exploitation lawsuit, negating a €1.5 billion penalty. The Google-related cases in the EU were the focal point of antitrust head Margrethe Vestager's efforts to control Silicon Valley.
The General Court of the EU in Luxembourg supported Alphabet's appeal against a penalty issued in 2019. They expressed that while the regulators were largely accurate in their assessments, they made significant errors in their investigation related to the length of the supposed misconduct.
The European Commission determined that Google, operating as a leading online advertisement agency, unlawfully impeded competitors like Yahoo and Microsoft from displaying ads on websites owned by others. The decision made on Wednesday is still open to challenge at the highest court of the bloc, the Court of Justice.
The resolution follows closely after antitrust head Margrethe Vestager secured two legal triumphs in her efforts to control Silicon Valley. Just last week, she achieved wins in the highest court against Google's efforts to evade a €2.4 billion antitrust fine for prioritizing its own product results in searches, and against Apple's attempts to dodge a €13 billion Irish tax liability.
