Franco Colapinto shares his thoughts on the moment he encountered Lewis Hamilton in Baku's parc ferme.
Franco Colapinto, the latest driver to earn points in F1, described meeting Lewis Hamilton as “a dream come true.”
Colapinto shone at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix this weekend, securing a spot in the top 10 during qualifying and ultimately finishing in 8th place in Baku.
Williams achieved their top combined result since the Hungarian Grand Prix of 2021, earning 10 points with Alex Albon securing seventh place, one position ahead.
Colapinto gained Hamilton's admiration, who welcomed the Argentine driver in parc ferme.
The Williams racer shared a photo on social media featuring himself and Hamilton post-race, with the caption: "Highlight of my day. It’s unbelievable and a dream fulfilled to shake hands with Lewis Hamilton after competing together. Amazing."
Colapinto entered his first Formula 1 race at the recent Italian Grand Prix following Williams' decision to replace Logan Sargeant.
There are no openings at Williams for the upcoming year since Carlos Sainz is transferring from Ferrari in 2025.
Colapinto is optimistic that his performance this year will demonstrate that he merits a spot on the grid in the future.
"They had immense faith and belief in giving me an opportunity," Colapinto remarked. "It was a risky decision, one that many didn't grasp."
“I aim to demonstrate my abilities and prove that I merit a place in Formula 1. James's idea and the chance he provided are enabling me to showcase my potential.”
“I’m putting in a significant amount of effort to learn quickly. I have limited experience driving a Formula 1 car, having only participated in two races, one Free Practice 1 session, and a handful of laps in Abu Dhabi last year.
"Considering the limited experience I have, finishing in the points in just my second race is really encouraging and a great achievement. We need to maintain this momentum, but it's definitely a promising beginning."
Williams has overtaken Alpine to secure the eighth position in the constructors' championship, with seven races left in the 2024 season.
