Final Lap Farewells? Perez, Ricciardo, and Sargeant Face Uncertain Futures Ahead of Belgian GP
Three racers could potentially be facing their final Formula 1 outing at the Belgian Grand Prix.
Sergio Perez faces significant stress as he approaches the upcoming race at Spa-Francorchamps this weekend.
The dip in performance by the Mexican driver has led to a planned meeting between Christian Horner and Helmut Marko during the summer hiatus.
Since the Miami Grand Prix in early June, Perez has not secured a position above seventh place.
His dip in performance has occurred simultaneously with McLaren's rise, narrowing Red Bull's advantage in the standings to a mere 51 points as the season approaches the last race before the break.
Though the drivers' championship holds the glamour, with Verstappen leading as the top contender for this season's title, it's the constructors' championship that brings in the financial rewards for both the team and its employees.
Perez's performance is proving to be a liability, as he is currently the sole top-eight driver who has yet to secure a victory this season, despite his past experience with Force India.
His first-quarter accident in Hungary might have sealed his fate regarding his continuation.
The issue for Red Bull lies in the lack of a clear successor.
Given his performance in the last 18 months, Yuki Tsunoda stands out as the most qualified, yet Red Bull appears to be uninterested in him.
Daniel Ricciardo stands out as the most seasoned choice and shares a strong rapport with Verstappen.
He possesses the experience to win races and represents a final opportunity to succeed in a premier vehicle.
Liam Lawson is considered an unlikely pick, and as Tsunoda puts it, selecting him due to his limited experience in F1 would be an "odd" decision.
Should Perez be substituted, it might mark his last appearance in Formula 1.
The impact of his time at Red Bull on his standing in the sport is yet to be determined, especially whether outfits such as Sauber or Williams continue to hold him in high regard. This comes after Perez was considered by many to be the top driver among F1's midfield competitors in 2020.
Daniel Ricciardo
A potential departure from the Red Bull team after the summer break could also include Ricciardo.
Since the beginning of the season, there has been a mounting expectation for Ricciardo to perform well for RB, with rumors of a possible replacement surfacing as soon as the Miami race.
The Australian player has displayed moments of exceptional skill during his time with RB, but the issue is his lack of consistency.
Should Perez be substituted at Red Bull, it's highly probable that Ricciardo will continue to compete in the races throughout the year.
Should Perez manage to stay on, and Red Bull decides to promote Lawson, Ricciardo's time in Formula 1 might come to an unexpected close.
Logan Sargeant
The path ahead for Logan Sargeant in Formula 1 remains uncertain.
The American racer deserves recognition for his significant progress in recent races, especially in single-lap performance.
Nonetheless, it appears to be a belated development for Sargent, as Williams is currently engaged in discussions with Carlos Sainz and Valtteri Bottas for the upcoming season.
Sargeant's prospects are also uncertain, with discussions suggesting that Andrea Kimi Antonelli might appear for the first time in the season's latter half, aiming for a debut at his home event in Monza, before possibly securing a permanent position with Mercedes in 2025.
Ex-Formula 1 racer Marcus Ericsson has stated that Sargeant and team leader James Vowles are currently not communicating with each other.
Ericsson mentioned on the Viaplay F1 podcast, "Some American acquaintances familiar with Sargeant shared with me that he's not enjoying his time with that team."
"He finds it extremely difficult, and it seems he and Vowles hardly communicate now, barely even exchanging hellos. There's a total disconnect between them."
