Fernando Alonso: The Key to Unlocking Adrian Newey’s Vision at Aston Martin
Main reason highlighted for Fernando Alonso's ability to support Adrian Newey at Aston Martin
Adrian Newey explained how Fernando Alonso can simplify his work
It has been proposed that Fernando Alonso's skill in connecting drivers with engineers could be beneficial to Adrian Newey.
In March 2025, Newey will transition from his position as Red Bull's chief technology officer to take on the role of managing technical partner and become a shareholder at Aston Martin.
Significantly, the most accomplished car designer in Formula 1 history will have the opportunity to impact the design of his new team's 2026 vehicle as the rules are updated.
Alonso, the most senior driver currently competing, has agreed to remain with his team through at least the conclusion of 2026.
However, he is currently contending with a vehicle that lags behind McLaren, Red Bull, Mercedes, and Ferrari, making the magnitude of the challenge evident.
Tom Clarkson, the host of the F1 Nation podcast, commented on Alonso's remarks, noting that Alonso expressed his desire in Hungary to establish a clear path with the car during the latter part of 2024 to ensure a successful season in 2025.
"However, they still haven't determined the path to take."
Sam Power, who works as a journalist for Channel 10 in Australia, responded by saying, "This is the best way for him to assist Newey."
"There are numerous individuals within the team who previously worked for Red Bull and are known to Adrian."
He'll consider: "Great, I'm aware of their potential, but I need a way to convey the intangible aspect, which is the key factor – what are their emotions? How is the equilibrium? How much assurance does it provide?"
Alonso is exceeding expectations with his performance in the Aston Martin. In his recent race at the F1 Singapore Grand Prix, he secured an eighth-place finish.
Lance Stroll, Alonso's teammate, finished in 14th place, which highlights Alonso's impressive performance.
"Power mentioned that he always enjoys seeing Fernando navigate this track, noting that the presence of the walls seems to ignite a fiery spirit in him."
"Observing the rear of his vehicle as several competitors attempt to overtake him, it is clear how strategically he is considering the race."
"When Fernando is having a good time during a race, you see the true essence of a professional racer. His performance is captivating."
Lawrence Barretto remarked, "Fernando's remarkable talent lies in his ability to outperform the car in each session. He accomplishes feats that most other drivers find impossible."
"This is not intended as a critique of Lance Stroll, yet there is a notable disparity between the two."
Lance has mentioned experiencing issues—he doesn't feel at ease in the car and is struggling to achieve the right balance.
It’s likely that Fernando is not satisfied with the car he has. However, as a two-time world champion and an exceptionally talented driver of his generation, he is able to extract more performance from it.
"He doesn’t receive the recognition he should for finishing in eighth place because he aims for higher achievements. Still, it’s an important accomplishment."
Barretto went on to say, "He experienced a successful period early on with Aston Martin, where he was competing for podium finishes."
"At this point, he's observed McLaren move forward, Ferrari increase their lead, while Red Bull and Mercedes remain distant."
"He's wondering, 'when will I ever have another car like that?'"
"He's not becoming any younger."
Many team members are concentrating on 2025, but they need to pay attention to 2024 in order to make advancements this year and gain momentum.
"If they quit this year, it will be more challenging to establish themselves next year."
