Fernando Alonso Stresses Team Effort Amid Adrian Newey Rumours as Aston Martin Faces Struggles
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey’s possible announcement this week
Fernando Alonso: "I don't believe in making excuses," as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, amidst ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's potential involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix suggest that Aston Martin might soon reveal that they have signed Newey.
Adrian Newey, the current chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. Following his departure, he will be eligible to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that he might join Aston Martin has intensified recently, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have faded.
While speaking at Monza, Alonso mentioned that the current information is still just speculation, and he believes that resolving the issues is not solely one person's responsibility.
"It's mainly about our current situation and what we're creating. It's important to recognize what's progressing positively and what's not, and then use that insight to better prepare for 2025."
Adrian Newey being free next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, which might provide them with a crucial edge when the new engine regulations are introduced.
Aston Martin has made a significant investment in a new facility at Silverstone and has extended Alonso's contract until the end of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disappointing.
Aston Martin currently holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a more aggressive push
“There’s nothing we can do about it,” Alonso responded. “We’re reliant on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best effort every weekend.”
"A weekend filled with inspiration, such as this one for me, will remain entirely anonymous."
“This season, Lance and I have had a lot of close finishes, often within two or three seconds of each other, either ahead or behind. This weekend, I managed to perform a bit better, felt satisfied with the car, and pushed it perhaps beyond its limits, which earned me a P11 finish.”
"Yes, we are disappointed. It's important to be patient and remember that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. The leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull right now means we must improve our performance. We need to elevate our standards and get better."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have sufficient time to make adjustments."
“McLaren transformed from last place to securing a podium finish in just four months, demonstrating clear progress.”
“Similarly, Mercedes began the season just like we did. In the initial four races, we were on par with Mercedes, and they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I’m not in favor of making excuses.”
However, it's improbable that Aston Martin will show better performance in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed frustration, saying that the current state of the car is insufficient and will remain so until it receives an upgrade.
"Fell short in Monza. Subpar performances in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe that significant changes won't happen in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"This is our strategy. The team understands the circumstances and is giving their all. We remain united and continue to strive forward. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we almost secured two points, and this will be our ongoing challenge."
