Fernando Alonso Downplays Adrian Newey Rumours, Urges Team Effort to Lift Aston Martin’s Fortunes Amid Struggles
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about a possible announcement involving Adrian Newey this week
Fernando Alonso comments on Aston Martin's difficulties, stating, "I don't believe in making excuses."
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, amidst ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating among the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal the recruitment of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the current chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. At that time, he will be free to join a competing Formula 1 team.
There has been increasing speculation lately that he might move to Aston Martin, especially as rumors about a potential switch to Ferrari have diminished.
“There are still just rumors, and I believe it’s not the responsibility of just one person to resolve the issues,” Alonso commented at Monza.
"It's about evaluating our current situation and output. We need to identify what is progressing well and what isn't, and use this insight to better prepare for 2025."
Next year, Newey’s availability could enable him to manage the 2026 vehicle for a different team, potentially offering them a significant edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso that extends through 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin currently holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. In the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured the 11th spot, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
Alonso responded by saying, "There's nothing we can do. We're relying on our team, and both Lance and I are giving it our all each weekend."
“During a weekend filled with inspiration, such as this one, I am certain it will remain entirely anonymous.”
“This year, Lance and I have been very closely matched, often finishing races just two or three seconds apart, whether ahead or behind. Today was one of those weekends where I performed slightly better. I felt satisfied with the car and pushed myself perhaps beyond my limits, resulting in an 11th place finish.”
"Yes, it's disappointing. We must remain patient and recognize that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that, as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we need to elevate our standards and improve our performance."
Alonso commented on the car for the coming year, stating, "I believe we still have the opportunity to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from being in last place to securing a podium finish in just four months. This serves as a clear example."
"Similarly, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. In the initial four races, we were matched with Mercedes, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't support making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show better performance in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed frustration, stating that the car's current performance would remain inadequate until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance in Monza was subpar. It wasn't satisfactory in Zandvoort, Spa, or Hungary either."
Therefore, I believe significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin are unlikely unless we introduce new components.
"This is our strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. So, yes, we remain united and continue to strive forward. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we nearly secured two points, and that will be our ongoing challenge."
