Fernando Alonso Dismisses Newey Rumours, Urges Team Effort as Aston Martin Faces Struggles
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey announcement
"I don’t believe in making excuses," says Fernando Alonso amid Aston Martin's challenges
Fernando Alonso asserts that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, even as Adrian Newey remains a subject of speculation.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might reveal the acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently serving as the chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. Following his departure, he will be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Recent speculation suggests that Aston Martin is becoming a more likely future for him, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
“There are still just rumors going around, and I believe it’s not solely one person’s responsibility to resolve the issues,” stated Alonso at Monza.
"It's really about our current situation and our outputs. We need to recognize what's working well and what's not, and focus on improving things for 2025."
Newey being free next year means he could supervise the creation of the 2026 car for a different team, offering them a significant edge with the upcoming engine regulations.
Aston Martin has significantly financed a new facility in Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso that extends through the end of 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disappointing.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll came in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a significant push in
“There’s nothing we can do about it,” Alonso responded. “We’re reliant on our team, and both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend.”
"During a particularly inspiring weekend, such as this one, I am confident that it will remain entirely anonymous."
"Throughout this year, Lance and I have consistently finished races very close to each other, typically within two or three seconds. Today was one of those days where I had a slight edge. I felt really good about the car and pushed it perhaps even beyond its limits, which resulted in an 11th place finish."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to be patient and recognize that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe as a collective, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we have to improve our standards. We need to enhance our performance."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from finishing last to securing a podium spot in just four months, providing us with clear evidence."
"Similarly, Mercedes began the season on par with us. During the initial four races, we matched their performance, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Hence, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will make progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that without an improvement to the car, their current performance is insufficient.
"Performance fell short in Monza. It was lacking in Zandvoort, in Spa, and in Hungary."
"I believe that significant changes won't occur in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"We have a strategy in place. Everyone on the team knows what's going on. They're giving it their all. We're staying together and continuing to strive. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we almost secured two points, and that's what we'll be fighting for."
