Fernando Alonso Dismisses Adrian Newey Rumours, Calls for Team-Wide Effort to Revive Aston Martin’s F1 Fortunes Amid Struggles
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don’t believe in making excuses," Fernando Alonso comments amid Aston Martin’s challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that it will take more than a single individual to resolve the issues at Aston Martin, even as Adrian Newey remains a potential candidate for involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might reveal the hiring of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently serving as the chief technology officer for Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. Once he steps down, he will have the freedom to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his future team has intensified lately, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
At Monza, Alonso commented that there are still just rumors circulating and emphasized that resolving the issues isn't solely one person's responsibility.
"It's about focusing on our current situation and production. We need to identify what's working and what's not, and aim to better prepare for 2025."
Next year, Newey could be available to supervise the 2026 car for a new team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso that runs through 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that complies with upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather disheartening.
Aston Martin is currently positioned in fifth place in the constructors' championship standings. In the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured the 11th spot, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a major push in
Alonso responded by saying, "There's nothing we can do. We're relying on our team, and both Lance and I are doing our best every weekend."
“A weekend filled with inspiration, similar to this one, is something I’m sure will remain entirely anonymous.”
"Throughout this year, Lance and I have often finished within two or three seconds of each other, either just ahead or just behind. Today was one of those times where I had a slight edge. I felt good about the car and pushed it perhaps beyond its limits, which resulted in me finishing in P11."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a spot in the top four. Those teams are elite and currently far ahead of us."
"However, being outpaced by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we need to elevate our performance. We must improve."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
“McLaren went from being in last place to reaching the podium in just four months, providing a clear example of rapid improvement.”
"Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. In the first four races, we were neck and neck, yet they've already secured three wins this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show better performance in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed frustration, saying, "I believe that this situation will remain unchanged until we improve the car, and currently, it is just not satisfactory."
"Performance lacked at Monza. It was subpar in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary as well."
"I believe there won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"This is the strategy. Everyone on the team understands what's going on. The team is giving it everything they've got. So yes, we remain unified. We continue to strive. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we almost secured two points, and that's the challenge we face."
