Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumors: ‘One Man Can’t Fix Aston Martin’s Struggles
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about an imminent announcement involving Adrian Newey
Fernando Alonso dismisses excuses as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso asserts that Aston Martin's issues cannot be resolved by a single individual, despite ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might reveal their acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently the chief technology officer at Red Bull, plans to leave his position early next year. After his departure, he will be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that he might join Aston Martin has intensified lately, while rumors about a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
Alonso commented at Monza, saying, "There are still just rumors, and I believe it's not solely one person's responsibility to make things right."
"It's really about our current situation and what we're generating. We need to identify what's progressing well and what's not, and then work on improving things for 2025."
If Newey is available next year, he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into building a new facility at Silverstone and has secured a contract with Alonso that lasts until the end of 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disappointing.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could be a period focused on growth, setting the stage for Aston Martin to make a significant push
“There’s not much we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re relying on our team, and both Lance and I are doing our utmost every weekend to perform at our best.”
"During one particularly inspiring weekend, similar to this one for me, I am certain it will remain entirely anonymous."
Throughout this year, Lance and I have consistently finished races within two or three seconds of each other, whether he was ahead or behind. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better. I felt satisfied with the car's performance and pushed myself possibly beyond my limits, which resulted in me finishing in P11.
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to be patient and keep in mind that our main objective is 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. The leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull indicates that we need to elevate our standards. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have sufficient time to make adjustments."
"Within a span of four months, McLaren advanced from the bottom of the standings to secure a podium finish. This serves as a clear illustration."
"Similarly, Mercedes began the season on par with us. In the first four races, we were on equal footing with them, yet they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will perform better in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the car needs an upgrade because its current performance is insufficient.
"Performance in Monza was subpar. It wasn't up to par in Zandvoort, Spa, or Hungary either."
"I believe there won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"We have a clear strategy. The team is fully informed about what’s going on. Everyone is putting in maximum effort. So yes, we remain united. We continue to strive forward. Last weekend we secured one point. Today, we were on the verge of getting two points, and this will be the challenge we face."
