F1 Mind Games: Christian Horner’s George Russell Tease Aims to Unsettle Toto Wolff, Says Nico Rosberg
Christian Horner aims to disrupt Toto Wolff by hinting at George Russell
Nico Rosberg evaluates the speculation that Red Bull could be interested in George Russell
Christian Horner's remarks regarding monitoring George Russell as a potential future driver for Red Bull were intended to provoke Toto Wolff.
According to Nico Rosberg, he was skeptical about the statements made by the Red Bull team principal.
During a discussion about potential drivers for the future, Horner mentioned, "We are open to exploring options outside our usual choices. George Russell's contract will expire at the end of the next year."
"Overlooking that factor would be unwise."
Throughout this season, Sergio Perez has often found himself facing pressure while being paired with Max Verstappen.
At Red Bull's affiliated team, Daniel Ricciardo will be substituted by Liam Lawson for the remainder of the season.
Jamie Chadwick, in a conversation with Sky Sports, commented that by mentioning George’s name, it indicates a lack of complete confidence in his four drivers, which seems logical.
"Checo needs to improve his performance. The team risks missing out on the constructors' championship due to the performance of their second driver."
"They plan to place Liam Lawson in the Red Bull car to evaluate if he is prepared for the top position."
"Consider exploring internally or externally within their talent pool to find additional drivers."
Former Mercedes driver Rosberg commented, “It’s a matter of policy and strategy since he aims to disrupt Toto.”
If Toto unexpectedly overhears Horner discussing Russell, and Russell happens to be without a contract, Toto could ponder, 'Should I explore securing an option on George?'
"It's disconcerting. It's just a part of the sport."
Next season, Russell is set to take on the role of Mercedes' lead driver as Lewis Hamilton departs for Ferrari. In his place, newcomer Kimi Antonelli will join the team.
A significant portion of Red Bull's challenges with their drivers centers on Perez.
Despite deciding not to make changes midway through the season, Perez secured a 10th-place finish in Singapore last weekend, providing McLaren with a crucial chance to gain an advantage in the constructors' standings.
"Rosberg commented that Max delivered an outstanding performance once more over the weekend, which significantly widened the gap."
The Red Bull vehicle is struggling, and the track in Singapore is proving to be the most challenging for it.
"He definitely needs to make some advancements soon, or else they'll start doubting him again in the coming year."
