F1 Delays Abu Dhabi Rookie Sprint Race to 2025 Amid Organizational Challenges; 2026 Regulations Revised
F1 has decided to delay its plan to hold a sprint race event exclusively for rookies in Abu Dhabi until 2025, pushing the proposal back by a year.
Formula 1 has decided not to proceed with its initial idea of holding a sprint race exclusively for rookie drivers following the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi.
The plan to organize a 10-car sprint race specifically for rookie drivers on the Tuesday following the season's final event in Abu Dhabi had gained significant backing from the teams, but it has now been delayed by a year.
A strategy is being developed to implement the concept at the conclusion of the 2025 season. This decision comes as a result of "timing and organisational constraints" that were highlighted during the recent F1 Commission meeting on Wednesday.
An FIA statement mentioned that there were talks about including a "rookie race" in the 2024 post-season testing schedule in Abu Dhabi.
Although the idea was widely welcomed, it was decided that because of scheduling and logistical challenges, the event won't occur in 2024. Conversations will proceed to develop a possible concept and plan for 2025.
Modifications to the 2026 Regulations and Introduction of Nine Test Days
The FIA has revealed changes to the rules set for 2026.
"The anticipated aerodynamic efficiency of the cars is set to improve, thanks to thorough cooperation between the teams and the FIA over recent months, they stated."
The financial rules set for 2026 are intended to build upon the existing regulations. These new rules aim to strike a balance between ensuring fair competition and maintaining financial health.
"The World Motor Sport Council is set to receive presentations on these three updates during its meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 17."
Furthermore, the FIA announced that pre-season testing for the 2026 season will include three separate sessions, each lasting three days.
Officials announced that the Sporting Regulations for 2026 have been extensively revised to make their layout more straightforward. They noted that, in terms of content, the pre-season testing schedule for 2026 will consist of three separate three-day tests. This adjustment acknowledges the complexities introduced by the new Power Unit Regulations.
