End of an Era: UK Closes Last Coal Power Plant, Embraces Renewables for a Greener Future
The final coal power station in the UK has shut down
The United Kingdom has decommissioned its last remaining coal power station, as noted in an analysis by the energy research group Ember, highlighting a significant milestone in the shift to more sustainable energy sources.
The closure of Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station in Nottinghamshire marks the conclusion of a period that started in 1882 with the inauguration of the first coal power plant in London. As per the report, coal was responsible for 39% of the U.K.'s electricity supply as recently as 2012, but its contribution has sharply decreased since then, stabilizing at about 2% since 2019.

In 2017, authorities in the United Kingdom declared their intention to cease using coal by 2025, marking a significant move towards sustainable energy. That year, Britain also celebrated its first coal-free day since 1882 in terms of electricity production. According to Ember, the proactive setting of this target for 2025 played a crucial role in accelerating the coal phaseout. This was further supported by the implementation of carbon pricing, substantial investments in offshore wind energy, enhancements to the electrical grid, and market reforms designed to boost renewable energy sources.
According to the report, wind and solar energy have largely taken over from coal, resulting in an estimated reduction of approximately 970 million tons of carbon emissions since 2012 and saving around $3.8 million. The U.K. aims to achieve a completely decarbonized power network by 2030.

In the U.K., transitioning to wind and solar energy has decreased the carbon emissions produced by its power grid. This reduction enhances the environmental friendliness of electric vehicles (EVs) that are charged using this cleaner energy. Similarly, in the U.S., the adoption of these renewable energy sources is increasing. Data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) reveals that wind and solar energy constituted 16% of the overall electricity production in 2023, a rise from 14% in 2022 and 8% in 2018.
According to a recent report by the Energy News Network, there's a trend where utilities, particularly in the Southeast, are opting for natural gas to meet the rising energy requirements driven by the production of electric vehicles and batteries, among other industrial activities. This choice may be steering these utilities towards less environmentally friendly options, despite the growing energy demands.
