SDLP chief Colum Eastwood has declared his decision to step down as leader of the party.
Mr. Eastwood has helmed the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) in Northern Ireland for almost ten years since his election in 2015.
He stepped down only two months after securing reelection in Foyle, albeit with a smaller winning margin of 4,166 votes.
His party experienced setbacks, facing significant losses in South Down and Upper Bann.

In declaring his resignation, he stated: "Politics is perpetually focused on upcoming challenges. For me, the approaching challenge is to create a new Ireland that is inclusive of everyone."
"I'm privileged to serve as the MP for Derry, a role I'm passionate about, and it was an honor to lead the SDLP. I look forward to the future with enthusiasm."
It is expected that he will continue as leader until the party selects a successor, who is anticipated to be announced in time for the party's annual conference in October.
Mr. Eastwood has expressed strong support for Claire Hanna, describing her as by far the most suitable successor.
Since 2019, Ms. Hanna, who represents Belfast South and Mid Down, reportedly has the full backing of her SDLP colleagues in the Stormont assembly.

Who is Colum Eastwood?
At the age of 14, the individual became a member of the SDLP in 1998, motivated by the signing of the Good Friday Agreement that same year and the leadership of John Hume, who was heading the SDLP at the time.
At the age of 22, Mr. Eastwood secured a seat on the Derry City Council and then made history by becoming the city's youngest mayor at 27, just five years after his election.
Shortly after his tenure in the mayor's office, he transitioned to a legislative role, securing a seat as an MLA for Foyle in 2011, once again standing out as the youngest. Within just four months, he was chosen to run for the position of deputy leader of the SDLP.
Despite the opportunity, he declined the proposition, opting to devote attention to his voters. Later, he contended for the helm of the SDLP against Alasdair McDonnell, criticizing the party for its dearth of innovation and expressing his desire to steer it towards a new path.
Mr. Eastwood secured the leadership position by asserting that a party with Irish nationalist views should not have its leadership based in Westminster.
At the age of 32, he took over as the sixth leader of the party in 2015
The leader of the SDLP secured the Foyle seat in the UK Parliament during the 2019 general elections, triumphing over the sitting Sinn Fein representative by a wide margin.
In July 2021, utilizing his parliamentary immunity, he disclosed the name of Soldier F, a former British serviceman involved in Northern Ireland's Troubles, in the House of Commons. Soldier F faced charges in 2023 for the killing of two civilians during Bloody Sunday.
