During Tesla's Q3 earnings discussion, CEO Elon Musk reversed his stance on a $25,000 electric car he once advocated for, labeling it as "pointless" and pointing towards self-driving vehicles as the way forward.

Elon Musk stated that Tesla's aim for a $25,000 electric vehicle would be exclusively for a self-driving taxi service, in reply to an inquiry on the timeline for a standard electric vehicle at this price range for consumers, as reported by InsideEVs' recap of the conversation.

"Essentially, it makes no sense to maintain a standard model priced at $25,000. It's nonsensical and contradicts our principles," Musk stated, further noting, "Our stance on the future being centered around autonomous vehicles has been made quite evident."

Tesla's Autonomous Taxi Service, Cybercab

At a recent gathering in October, Tesla unveiled its futuristic designs with the self-driving Cybercab and Robovan models. The Cybercab, which lacks both a steering wheel and pedals and can seat two people, is expected to hit the market "prior to 2027" with a price tag under $30,000, according to Musk's statements at the gathering. However, Tesla's full commitment to developing fully autonomous vehicles is a shift that has taken shape more recently.

Since 2020, Elon Musk has been vocal about his vision to produce a Tesla model priced at $25,000. He emphasized the importance of this affordable electric vehicle during Tesla's Battery Day event. Musk attributed the possibility of lower costs to the expansion of big-sized batteries and advancements in battery compositions, such as the use of lithium iron phosphate (LFP). He projected that this reasonably priced car could hit the market by 2023.

Tesla's communications about the initiative have been inconsistent. A high-ranking Tesla official in China stated in 2021 that the budget-friendly electric vehicle was being developed. However, Musk later announced that Tesla had no plans for a $25,000 electric vehicle and that the focus was on the robotaxi endeavor.

Tesla hints at a $25,000 model release in 2023 during their Battery Day

In the first month of the current year, it's been said that Tesla reached out to its component providers to gear up for a budget-friendly vehicle expected to launch in 2025. Insiders suggest that this vehicle, referred to as Redwood, is projected to have an annual production exceeding half a million units.

During a subsequent briefing with a Q&A session for investors, there was no mention of the $25,000 Tesla initiative by either the organization or Elon Musk. Despite this, Musk touched on the reasoning behind the potential for a more affordable vehicle, pointing out that the top-selling gas-powered cars worldwide are priced below Tesla's Model Y and Model 3. A separate update in April suggested that the project was entirely scrapped. This, along with Musk's remarks on the third-quarter investor conference call, appeared to signal the project's conclusion. However, that may not be the full story.

In the same conversation, Musk emphasized the importance of making electric vehicles accessible to all by ensuring that the overall cost per mile is on par with various transportation modes. He also mentioned that the company is progressing with plans to introduce new vehicles, including budget-friendly options, with the rollout expected to commence in the first half of 2025.

Stellantis Revs Up EV Efficiency with $29.5M Wind Tunnel Upgrade in Michigan

Published

on

By

Stellantis is addressing electric vehicle aerodynamics with a significant investment into their wind tunnel technology. On Wednesday, they announced a substantial $29.5 million enhancement of their primary R&D wind tunnel located in Auburn Hills, Michigan. This upgrade equips their engineers with advanced capabilities to boost the efficiency and driving distance of EVs.

Stellantis has announced enhancements to the wind tunnel that has been functional since 2002, incorporating features that allow for detailed assessment of the wind resistance encountered by wheels and tires. They noted that these components could be responsible for as much as 10% of aerodynamic drag experienced in actual driving conditions.

Automobiles are stationary, resting on air-cushioned belts that rotate all wheels. An additional active belt simulates the motion experienced when driving on a road. The belts are powered by compressed air and can reach speeds of 140 mph, while the tunnel itself can produce winds of up to 160 mph, as per Stellantis. This automaker employs comparable wind-tunnel techniques at its various international locations, yet the Michigan site is unique in that it can house bigger vehicles, such as electric vehicles built on the STLA Large and STLA Frame architectures.

The aerodynamic testing facility operated by Stellantis is located in Auburn Hills

Stellantis notes that thanks to enhanced automation, adjustments to the wheelbase and track width that typically require around two hours in traditional wind tunnels can now be completed in mere minutes. This improvement enables the wind tunnel to remain an essential counterpart to computerized modeling.

"Mark Champine, who oversees the technical engineering centers for Stellantis in North America, expressed in a statement that this device significantly enhances online resources. These resources might overlook elements like the warping of tires that can affect airflow. Thanks to this innovation, we're able to imitate these situations and gather instant data to seek out answers."

The aerodynamic testing corridor falls under a projected investment of $85 million for infrastructure enhancements, as outlined in a 2019 agreement between Stellantis and the United Auto Workers. Meanwhile, it's said that the vehicle manufacturer is considering putting its Arizona test site on the market.

The aerodynamic testing facility operated by Stellantis is located in Auburn Hills

The imperative to extend the distance electric vehicles can travel on a single charge, without increasing the size of their battery packs, has rekindled a longstanding fascination with aerodynamic design—a domain well-known to Stellantis. In 1934, the Chrysler Airflow was introduced, featuring a design shaped by wind tunnel experiments, which at the time, sparked debate. Fast forward to 2022, the Airflow moniker has been brought back for an electric SUV prototype, yet it remains to be seen if this model or an upcoming new minivan will emerge as Chrysler's inaugural electric vehicle.

Significantly, the 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona is making waves in aerodynamic design. Built on the STLA Large platform, it's a testing ground for cutting-edge solid-state batteries. This electric powerhouse marries a contemporary aero design with a nod to the iconic 1968 Charger, thanks to a cleverly designed front airfoil that counters its inherently boxy front. The Daytona moniker, now signifying all-electric variants, harks back to the Charger Daytona racer, famous for its aerodynamic enhancements like a sharp nose cone and towering rear wing, which were instrumental in reducing drag on NASCAR's high-speed circuits.

Stellantis aims to have half of their car sales in the U.S. consist of electric vehicles (EVs) and to fully transition to EV sales in Europe by the year 2030. Furthermore, the company plans

Costco Accelerates into the EV Charge Game: New Fast-Charging Station Marks Retail Giant’s Electric Ambition

Published

on

By

Costco reenters the electric vehicle charging scene by introducing a branded DC fast-charging station at its latest store in Ridgefield, Washington. This move appears to signal a renewed emphasis on providing EV charging solutions by the retail heavyweight.

Electric Era, the company responsible for implementing the charging service here, states that it successfully installed the new rapid charging station in a mere seven weeks, starting from the signing of the agreement to the inauguration of the station.

This is an incredibly fast pace, surpassing even the quick charging times of Tesla's Superchargers. Take California as an example, a state that urgently needs to expand its public charging infrastructure. There, charging stations often remain idle for several months as they await finalization. Furthermore, a new study has found that utilities usually require about 17 weeks to just hook up a completed charging station to the electrical grid.

Electric Era brands itself as a comprehensive partner for electric vehicle charging solutions. The company integrates battery storage into its charging units right from the beginning, employing artificial intelligence-powered software to regulate load and maintain it below a certain peak, which reduces the required transformer size by over 60%. It proudly claims that its charging stations will maintain an operational status of over 98% for each port.

Costco's era of electric vehicle charging stations

The collaboration between Electric Era and Costco emphasizes dependable service, economic value, and exceptional market reach. Electric Era states this strategy is customized for the demands of substantial retail chains such as Costco. The company boasts of its ability to remotely oversee its charging stations with "high-rate telemetry" and maintains a round-the-clock team ready to resolve issues and provide assistance as needed.

Electric Era claims their platform provides adaptable 32-inch widescreen panels designed for tailored messages and advertising.

It's particularly interesting to observe that this particular charging facility carries the Costco label rather than that of Electric Era. Green Car Reports has made contact with Costco for more details on their partnership scope. At present, the situation appears similar to that of Walmart in 2023, who indicated a move away from Electrify America by disclosing plans to develop Walmart's proprietary network for rapid EV charging.

Currently, the charging firm has informed GCR that it is engaged in continuous talks with Costco to consider possible locations for expansion in the future.

An earlier study conducted by Consumer Reports this year revealed that large retail outlets and quick service restaurants are falling short in supplying sufficient electric vehicle charging stations for their patrons and the neighboring areas.

Electric vehicle charging facility located at Costco

Costco has a history with electric vehicle charging, being an early adopter among large retail chains by setting up Level 2 charging stations at several of its stores in California back in the late '90s. However, these stations weren't compatible with the common J1772 connectors used by vehicles like the Nissan Leaf or, with an extra accessory, the Tesla Model S. Ultimately, Costco decided to discontinue its electric vehicle charging services in 2011 and 2012.

For years, the merchant has depended on its fueling centers to attract customers to its main shopping facilities. Presently, it manages fueling centers at most of its bulk-sale locations, which are typically operational round-the-clock. Additionally, similar to the requirement for purchasing in their shops, filling your tank at Costco necessitates having a membership.

A high-ranking official stated merely a year ago that there were no intentions to phase out the profitable petrol stations. However, by maintaining them and incorporating electric vehicle charging options, they may attract an even larger consumer base.

Scout Motors Unveils Retro-Inspired Electric SUV and Pickup for 2027: The Traveler and Terra Take Aim at the EV Market

Published

on

By

Scout Motors showcased its concept designs for an electric SUV named Traveler and an electric pickup called Terra on Thursday. These vehicles are set to be produced by the Volkswagen Group's latest brand, with production kicking off in 2027 at its newly established $2 billion facility in South Carolina. Scout estimates that the concept designs are roughly 85% similar to what the final versions will look like.

The Scout brand introduces two new vehicles, the Traveler SUV and the Terra pickup, both built on a unique body-on-frame chassis designed solely for Scout. These vehicles come equipped with four-wheel drive and a sturdy rear axle, adhering to a traditional design aimed at enhancing their off-road prowess and towing abilities. Scout projects that the pickup will be able to tow over 10,000 pounds, while the SUV should manage about 7,000 pounds. Both models are expected to support a maximum load of up to 2,000 pounds.

Explorer Adventurer SUV design idea

The construction method of the Scout EVs, which involves a separate body and frame, connects them to the legacy of the first Scout trucks produced by International Harvester between 1961 and 1980. Volkswagen secured the Scout nameplate following its purchase of Navistar, which had been a subsequent iteration of International Harvester, in 2020. This homage is visible in the vintage design elements such as the boxy grilles and the distinct upward slope at the bottom of the rear window seen on the Traveler SUV model. This model will also feature an option for a Cabana Top, providing a roof opening that's more expansive than the standard sunroof.

Unlike the Volkswagen ID electric vehicles, Scout places importance on physical touch by incorporating manual door handles and traditional control features. This is part of Scout's aim to ensure that their vehicles are simple to fix. The company states that around 80% of maintenance tasks can be completed without the need to visit an official car dealer.

Idea for Explorer Adventurer Design

The vehicle also offers a nod to the past with the option of a continuous front seat, but those preferring a more standard arrangement can opt for individual front seats separated by a central console. For a contemporary feel, it boasts a sizable 16.2-inch touchscreen display and a 12.3-inch digital dashboard.

Scout reveals that the Terra model stretches out to 229.2 inches, while the Traveler is slightly shorter at 207.9 inches, yet both have a width of 91.6 inches. The company highlights that both versions can fit 35-inch tires, boast more than twelve inches of space above the ground, and have the ability to traverse water up to three feet deep. Additionally, they come with the option of a detachable front sway bar and mechanical lockers at both ends to boost their off-road prowess. When it comes to driving on roads, Scout boasts that these trucks can unleash up to 1,000 lb-ft of torque, enabling them to accelerate from a standstill to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds.

Idea for the Scout Terra

Scout intends to introduce two variations of its models: a fully electric option and a version with an extended driving capability, the latter being named Harvester as a nod to Scout's initial maker. The all-electric models are designed to provide a maximum driving distance of 350 miles and will be equipped with Tesla's NACS plug to enable swift DC charging right away. Meanwhile, the Harvester models with range extension are projected to achieve a total travel distance of 500 miles, as per Scout's claims.

The vehicle is designed with a high-voltage 800-volt system that supports rapid charging at rates up to 350 kilowatts, along with the capability for bidirectional charging. Additionally, the Scout Terra truck comes equipped with a pair of 120-volt sockets and a single 240-volt socket within its 5.5-foot standard bed. This space can also hold a 35-inch backup tire when using an available carrier, although the default mounting point beneath the bed fits tires up to 33 inches. The Traveler SUV similarly offers a standard carrier at the back for a spare tire.

Idea for the Scout Traveler

Scout anticipates that the starting price for both versions will be below $60,000, a significant increase from the $40,000 starting price mentioned by CEO Scott Keogh back in 2023. However, once incentives are applied, the initial cost is expected to be around $50,000 for the Traveler model and $51,500 for the Terra model, Scout suggests. The booking window opens on October 24th, with a $100 deposit that can be refunded.

In 2022, the Volkswagen Group unveiled Scout as a new brand governed by the main corporation, not its American division, opening up opportunities for an alternative direct-sales approach. The revelation arrived amid soaring interest in electric vehicles, catching VW's American dealers off guard as they had been requesting an electric pickup. Instead, they will soon see a revival of a 1960s classic with the electric ID.Buzz van.

Scout Motors Ignites EV Nostalgia with Electric Traveler SUV and Terra Pickup, Targeting 2027 Launch

Published

on

By

Scout Motors showcased prototypes of its upcoming electric SUV and pickup truck, the Traveler and Terra, on Thursday. These vehicles are the focus of the Volkswagen Group's new brand, which plans to commence production in 2027 at its freshly-announced $2 billion facility in South Carolina. Scout estimates that the concept designs reflect approximately 85% of what the final vehicles will look like.

The Scout brand is introducing two new vehicles, the Traveler SUV and the Terra pickup truck, both built on a unique body-on-frame structure designed specifically for these models. This traditional design incorporates four-wheel drive and a robust rear axle, aiming to enhance the vehicles' performance in off-road conditions and their towing abilities. Scout anticipates that the pickup can tow in excess of 10,000 pounds, while the SUV is expected to handle up to 7,000 pounds. Additionally, each model is designed to carry a payload of up to 2,000 pounds.

Exploratory Scout SUV design idea

The design of the Scout electric vehicles, which uses a body-on-frame build, connects them to the classic Scout trucks produced by International Harvester between 1961 and 1980. Volkswagen acquired the Scout name when it took over Navistar, the follow-on firm, in 2020. This homage is evident in the vintage design elements reminiscent of the first Scout models, such as square-shaped grilles and an elevated line at the bottom of the rear window on the Traveler SUV. Additionally, this SUV will come with an option for a Cabana Top, which provides a more expansive opening than a standard sunroof.

Unlike the Volkswagen ID electric vehicles, Scout focuses on a more physical touch by including manual door handles and traditional control features. This is in line with Scout's aim to make their vehicles simple to fix. The company states that around 80% of fixes can be done independently, without the need for a service center visit.

Idea for the Explorer Nomad

The option for a continuous front seat is a nod to vintage design, but there's also the choice for the more standard design of individual front seats separated by a central console. Contemporary features are present too, such as a sizable 16.2-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital display for the dashboard instruments.

Scout reveals that the Terra model spans a length of 229.2 inches, while the Traveler is slightly shorter at 207.9 inches; however, both variants share a width of 91.6 inches. The company has engineered these vehicles to support 35-inch tires and boast a ground clearance surpassing 12 inches, along with the ability to navigate through water up to three feet deep. Enhancements for improved off-road performance include an optional front sway bar disconnect and mechanical lockers at both the front and rear. When it comes to on-road performance, Scout boasts that these trucks can leverage up to 1,000 lb-ft of torque to accelerate from a standstill to 60 mph within just 3.5 seconds.

The idea of the Scout Terra

Scout intends to introduce purely electric as well as range-extended variants for both of its model types, with the range-extended option being named Harvester as a nod to the brand that produced the first Scout vehicles. The all-electric models are designed to provide a maximum distance of 350 miles per charge and will be equipped with the NACS connector, compatible with Tesla's fast-charging network, right from their launch. The Harvester models, which include a range-extender, are projected to achieve a total travel distance of up to 500 miles, as per Scout's announcements.

The Scout Terra pickup is designed with an electrical system capable of handling 800 volts, allowing for swift charging rates of up to 350 kw and the ability to charge in both directions. It comes equipped with two 120-volt sockets and a single 240-volt socket within its 5.5-foot bed as a standard feature. This space can also fit a 35-inch spare tire if the optional carrier is used, while the default mounting point beneath the bed supports tires up to 33 inches. Similarly, the Traveler SUV is equipped with a standard carrier at the rear for a spare tire.

The idea of the Scout Traveler

Scout anticipates that the initial cost for both of its models will be below $60,000, marking a significant increase from the $40,000 starting price mentioned by CEO Scott Keogh in 2023. However, after including incentives, the entry-level prices are expected to be nearer to $50,000 for the Traveler and $51,500 for the Terra, as per Scout's information. The booking window for these models opens on October 24, with a $100 deposit that can be refunded.

In 2022, the Volkswagen Group launched Scout as a new brand within its portfolio, but not under the VW of America umbrella. This setup permits a unique direct-sales approach. The unveiling came at a time when electric vehicles (EVs) were in high demand, catching VW's American dealers off-guard as they had been advocating for an electric pickup. Instead, they're poised to receive a retro EV reminiscent of the 1960s with the upcoming ID.Buzz van.

2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz: The Electrifying Rebirth of a Nostalgic Icon

Published

on

By

Article Overview: The 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz Revives the Classic with an Electric Twist

Volkswagen's much-anticipated electric revival of its iconic Bus is set to make its debut in the States. It seems Volkswagen has ingeniously crafted this electric vehicle to honor its heritage while paving the way for its future.

Everyone desires to own one. Indeed, it's behind schedule, having been plagued by years of failed attempts and prototype models, and perhaps the initial free spirits have ceased their nomadic lifestyle. Yet, people of all ages share tales and experience a sense of yearning for the past at the sight of this van's distinctive front and iconic dual-colored design.

During the previous week, I had the chance to take the ID.Buzz for a spin, not around the bustling streets of San Francisco, but rather amidst the serene countryside lanes and the residential areas of northern Georgia. The variety of inquiries, onlookers, and gestures of approval – including positive signals from a worn-down Tacoma, an Explorer, and a Cybertruck – made it crystal clear in just a short 10 minutes that the widespread appeal for this vehicle is about to explode, extending well past the liberal strongholds and alternative lifestyle hubs.

Upcoming 2025 VW ID.Buzz

Upcoming 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz

The ID.Buzz garners happy reactions from all who see it and manages to rise above the noise of the current debates over electric vehicles in the United States, regardless of its power source – an impressive achievement in a year of elections. It is indeed an electric vehicle, and at the same time, its electric nature is of no consequence.

If Volkswagen was concerned about when they launched the product, it made me curious if the delayed debut actually worked in favor of the ID.Buzz reaching its full capability—given that it isn't a clumsy, flat tribute to its predecessors.

The design of the ID.Buzz makes a great impression without being overwhelming

The ID.Buzz avoids the trap that many modern vehicles fall into, where their throwback design is overbearing—a fate even VW's New Beetle couldn't escape. Instead, the Buzz strikes a perfect balance with its nostalgic exterior, while on the inside, it's simply an outstanding van that leverages its electric vehicle foundation to the fullest.

The design elements reminiscent of the 1950s and 1960s might be noticeable, yet when examined from any side except the front, the Buzz reflects a modern take on the Eurovan design. Essentially, it's a spacious vehicle with a nearly flat floor, equipped with three rows that can accommodate as many as seven passengers, offering a substantial amount of flexibility and storage capacity.

2025 Model of Volkswagen ID.Buzz

In the American market, the ID.Buzz is available in a selection of seven dual-color designs that combine various hues with white, alongside a cherry red and gray combo, or in plain white, gray, or black. Currently, and for the foreseeable future, the ID.Buzz will only be sold in the U.S. as a three-row vehicle, measuring 195.4 inches in length and with a notably long 127.5-inch wheelbase. Standing at 76.2 inches tall, it's roughly 10 inches higher than VW's ID.4 crossover. However, it maintains a reasonable 6.1-inch clearance from the ground, which should suffice for navigating the rougher paths leading to camping sites or trail entrances.

First takes on the VW ID.Buzz: It's speedy and silent, accurate yet weighty. VW made the call to not release the ID.Buzz in its initial standard-wheelbase version in the U.S., leading to a two-year delay in its debut. The American version will see enhancements such as an extended length by roughly 10 inches, an updated infotainment system, refined software, a stronger rear motor, and a larger 91-kwh battery, compared to the 82-kwh battery used in the European models.

What's the driving experience like with the ID.Buzz? In a single term: weighty. Indeed, the vehicle's three-ton weight is noticeable. The suspension is engineered for comfort rather than agility, favoring a smooth ride over sporty handling. However, the vehicle's low center of gravity and accurate steering prevent it from being unwieldy. For those accustomed to operating large, truck-like vans as well as conventional minivans, the ID.Buzz's handling will feel familiar, landing squarely in the minivan category. With a substantial width of 78.1 inches, excluding the mirrors, the ID.Buzz felt stable and easy to maneuver on Georgia's slim backroads that lack a roadside buffer.

When you're in a parking lot, this vehicle is just as lengthy as many large SUVs that have three rows of seats. The model I tested, which had a single motor and rear-wheel drive, could turn in an impressive 37.4 feet. However, models with all-wheel drive have a wider turning radius of 42.7 feet. It's genuinely beneficial to have traditional visibility through the windows, which supplements the camera systems and auditory alerts.

2025 Model of Volkswagen ID.Buzz

2025 VW ID.Buzz

2025 Model of Volkswagen ID.Buzz

Volkswagen hasn't indicated any major adjustments to the suspension system in the updated version of this model for the American market. However, during our test drive, this ID.Buzz exhibited less front-end dipping during intense braking compared to our experience with the shorter model a few years back—possibly an advantage of the extended body.

The ID.Buzz is powered by Volkswagen's enhanced electric motor, known as AP550, which is also found in the 2024 VW ID.4, delivering power to the back wheels with a force of 282 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. The forthcoming all-wheel-drive models will feature this same motor at the back as well as an additional inductive motor at the front, contributing an extra 99 pound-feet of torque and increasing the combined power to 335 horsepower.

One reviewer who tested the ID.Buzz described its performance as lethargic, but in my experience, the vehicle displayed ample zest even with just one motor. Volkswagen states that the dual-motor variant can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.0 seconds, while the rear-wheel-drive model we drove achieves the same in roughly 7.5 seconds. The ID.Buzz can tow up to 2,600 pounds if the trailer has brakes, or 1,650 pounds if it doesn't.

Indeed, it packs some weight. The version we took for a spin, with its lighter rear-wheel-drive configuration, tipped the scales at a notable 5,968 pounds. Should you opt for the all-wheel drive with two motors, the weight climbs to 6,197 pounds.

2025 Model of Volkswagen ID.Buzz

The ID.Buzz's power efficiency options

Within the ID.Buzz, similar to other electric vehicles from Volkswagen, manipulating the gear shifter allows the driver to select the 'D' setting for coasting with little regenerative braking, or 'B' for increased energy recapture, which is still relatively gentle. Engaging the Sport driving mode enhances the regenerative impact in both 'D' and 'B' settings, which is particularly beneficial on undulating, winding roads. Despite this, the vehicle lacks a fully integrated one-pedal driving experience. However, the braking system's response and integration are top-notch, offering a reliable and smooth operation.

Volkswagen has announced that the ID.Buzz has an efficiency of 2.5 miles per kilowatt-hour (83 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent) in combined driving conditions, while on the EPA's highway test, it achieves 2.2 miles per kilowatt-hour (75 MPGe). During a drive that included a 110-mile route ascending into gentle hills, encompassing various driving conditions like U.S. interstate speeds, quick-paced secondary roads, and moderate-velocity suburban routes, with the temperature hovering around 50 degrees Fahrenheit, the vehicle's onboard computer showed I managed an efficiency of 2.6 miles per kilowatt-hour. Later, during a relaxed drive on mostly flat highways at speeds between 65 and 70 miles per hour, the efficiency stood at 2.4 miles per kilowatt-hour.

2025 Model of the Volkswagen ID.Buzz

We also powered up the ID.Buzz using Level 2 charging to utilize its 11-kw internal charger, along with some DC rapid charging. Although the scenario might not reflect the typical owner's experience on a long drive, we connected a 160-kw CCS plug at 44% battery level and observed a maximum charge rate of 117 kw when it hit 49%, with the battery achieving a 90% charge in roughly thirty minutes. According to VW, utilizing DC rapid charging capabilities of up to 200 kw can allow the battery to go from a 10% to an 80% charge in just about 26 minutes.

Overall, although the display indicated a full charge would only cover about 191 miles, our experience showed an improvement, aligning more closely with the Buzz’s official EPA estimated range of 234 miles (or 231 miles for the all-wheel-drive version).

2025 VW ID.Buzz Model

The built-in navigation system incorporates journey organization, initiating battery pack preconditioning to optimize the charging speed automatically when a charging station is plotted on the route or when prompted by tapping a digital button on the display. If you prefer using an alternative map application, the system is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto through smartphone integration. I alternated between using CarPlay and the native system, finding both options performed admirably.

The VW ID.Buzz, with its three rows, offers ample adaptable storage options, including door compartments and multiple other spots for stashing items. The elevated center console in front can be fully removed from the car, doubling as a compact cooler if desired. Additionally, there's a retractable drawer equipped with cupholders and extra space for tucking items away, contributing to the vehicle's open and roomy ambiance. The door panels feature dual-tiered bins, and there's even a dashboard tray to conveniently hold all the little necessities for a journey on the road.

I discovered that the non-slip shelf located to the right of the steering wheel was the perfect spot to wirelessly charge my phone, keeping it securely in place. To enhance the vehicle's accommodation for three rows, they've incorporated a total of eight USB-C outlets. The front seats offer heating, cooling, and power-adjustment features, along with an integrated armrest and a raised seating posture, providing the spinal support I prefer during extended journeys.

The automatic sliding door operates smoothly, reminiscent of the high-end minivans you might have experienced, and it conveniently avoids obstructing the charging process. One of the main decisions for purchasers of the ID.Buzz, aside from selecting a hue, is choosing between the seating configurations. Our version featured a middle bench, but you have the option to swap it for individual second-row seats, accommodating up to six passengers – a necessity for the all-wheel-drive models.

2025 Model of the Volkswagen ID.Buzz

2025 Model of Volkswagen ID.Buzz

2025 Model of Volkswagen ID.Buzz

Upon initial inspection, the rear storage space of the Buzz might come across as somewhat peculiar, featuring baskets under a robust flip-up door. However, when the third and second rows are folded down, they create a uniform surface, with only a minor few-inch discrepancy between them. For those considering using the vehicle as a makeshift bed, a solid plywood board could easily bridge that gap. It's worth noting that the seats must be removed for this setup, and they are quite hefty. Moreover, the very back of the vehicle steps up, necessitating an additional leveling solution for those wishing to sleep or dwell within the Buzz for extended periods beyond mere transportation.

Volkswagen anticipates that most buyers of the Buzz model will likely switch from owning "large SUVs." The vehicle offers a greater amount of space inside compared to the Atlas, yet has the same exterior size as a Cross Sport. Additionally, Volkswagen asserts that when it comes to the space available for third-row passengers' legs, the Buzz leads the pack among other vehicles available in the US market.

Upcoming 2025 model of the Volkswagen

2025 model of the Volkswagen ID.Buzz

Volkswagen has maintained the same power window control system from the ID.4 and the European version of the ID.Buzz, which operates both front and rear windows with a single switch. This includes the unique smaller rear window feature within the larger one. However, this could be particularly perplexing and excessive. Volkswagen, what was the reasoning behind imposing this on users?

The only other issue I have, which comes after praising the quiet engine and excellent blocking out of tire noise, is the noticeable sound of wind that starts to creep in just over 65 mph near the front pillar and side mirror. It escalates to a near-whistle at 80 mph. It's worth mentioning that the model I tested was a pre-production prototype, so the window sealing might not have been as good as the final production version.

According to VW, the American version of the ID.Buzz boasts a drag coefficient of 0.29 and has increased its maximum speed to 99 mph, a step up from the 90 mph top speed of previous European models.

Volkswagen's ID.Buzz Model Scheduled

ID.Buzz costs: Beginning of a disappointing journey?

The only perplexing aspect is the Buzz's pricing and market placement. It's utterly baffling.

Due to its design approach—functional inside and classic touches on the exterior without going overboard—the most baffling aspect is understanding Volkswagen's perspective of the ID.Buzz as a specialty vehicle.

The starting price for the Buzz is set at $61,545, which includes the $1,550 charge for delivery. The base model, known as the Pro S, comes equipped with essential safety features, tri-zone temperature control, an electrically operated trunk and side doors, heated seats in the second row, and an upgraded 12.9-inch entertainment system. The Pro S Plus model builds on this by including a fold-away towing hitch, a display projected onto the windshield, an upscale Harmon Kardon sound system, and exclusively in the all-wheel drive models, a configuration with individual captain's chairs and a windshield that heats up. The premium 1st Edition variant is priced at $67,045 with a single motor setup, or $71,545 for the all-wheel drive option, and features a wide sunroof, a dual-color scheme (also available as an add-on), bars for the roof, and custom floor mats.

We evaluated the ID.Buzz model, a Pro S Plus variant, sporting a dual-tone exterior in Cabana Blue and Candy White which costs an additional $995. The interior features a Dune theme, coupled with an optional panoramic electrochromic sunroof that's impressively large, measuring 67.4 inches in length and 40.8 inches in width, bringing the total to $67,535. When sunlight hit it, the glass roof took on a shimmering gray hue. According to VW, this sunroof and the hideaway trailer hitch are both new offerings from the brand in the U.S. market.

2025 Model of Volkswagen ID.Buzz

Volkswagen is not considering the production of the ID.Buzz for the American market in the near future, eliminating the possibility of a $7,500 tax rebate (though reduced-price leases might be an option due to the electric vehicle leasing exception). Surprisingly, the development of the Buzz did not follow the typical route for passenger vehicles; rather, the company's commercial-vehicles division took charge of the project. This is unexpected, given that it appears to be a project that should have been fundamental to Volkswagen's continued existence, similar to the significance of the Golf model.

In 1965, as the popularity of the Microbus began to surge and it became linked with the counterculture movement, the standard price for a new car was roughly $2,650. Meanwhile, the basic yet beloved series of Microbuses had a maximum price of approximately $2,550. Utilizing the federal government’s official consumer price index calculator, the cost of VW's Microbus at that time translates to around $25,400 today.

Currently, the standard cost for a brand-new car is approximately $48,000. Volkswagen's decision to offer their latest model at a 25% higher price point highlights their strategy to position it as a luxury item. It's a specialized model that might not be a permanent fixture in the market.

However, in its current guise, the ID.Buzz might dominate its market segment for a considerable period. Think back to the era when minivans were a bold expression of style? Models like the Chevy Astro Van, the Ford Aerostar, the Pontiac Trans Sport, GM's "dustbuster" vans, the Toyota Previa: The ID.Buzz has that same level of eye-catching appeal, but with longevity.

2025 Model of Volkswagen ID.Buzz

The ID.Buzz should have been positioned as an essential $40,000 model, adopting a sales approach similar to Scion's strategy in the past, with the addition of a flexible interior and a vast range of genuine VW add-ons. It would have been a hit among various consumer groups—from companies to adventurous youths, to households wanting a versatile vehicle that adapts over time. Moreover, it could have alleviated car dealers' concerns about the viability of traditional sales methods in the age of electric vehicles.

Currently, the ID.Buzz is an impressive offering that unfortunately confines the brand's potential in the U.S. market to an absurdly limited scope.

Are consumers who find the ID.Buzz too expensive going to opt for a Kia EV9 or a standard Rivian R1S? Will Volkswagen dealerships exercise restraint in their pricing practices? Time for the madness to start.

Toyota's Upcoming 2025 Lineup Highlights

We're eagerly anticipating the Mini Land Cruiser… and the updated RAV4.

Toyota is keeping its 2025 lineup under wraps for now. However, we're covering the potential debut vehicles that may emerge in the next few months, including the much-awaited Mini Land Cruiser, a compact SUV tailored for enthusiasts of the now-discontinued Suzuki Jimny.

We are equally excited about the much-anticipated launch of the latest RAV4 model and the arrival of the revamped Corolla Cross, which is already available in certain global markets. Moreover, for the sake of enthusiasm, we are hopeful for the comeback of the hybrid sedan Camry and are eager to witness the thrilling surprise of the GR Supra GRMN.

Upcoming Toyota Models for 2025

Toyota's Compact Land Cruiser (2025)

Kicking off with an intriguing option for those who favor affordability and compact size for off-roading: Toyota's Compact Land Cruiser.

This model, introduced with the prototype of the Compact Cruiser EV and which has already been teased officially, might be built on the platform of the Hilux Champ, an affordable pickup designed for emerging markets.

There are whispers that the Hilux's turbo diesel engine, a 2.8-liter unit with mild hybridization, might be utilized, but we need to approach this information with caution and see how things unfold.

Our associates at Motor1.com Brazil have hinted that the vehicle might be named Land Cruiser FJ and that its production is set to commence in November in Thailand, paving the way for sales to kick off towards the end of this year through to the beginning of 2025. Ultimately, the burning question remains whether this car will make its way to Europe – we're keeping our fingers crossed for a positive response!

Toyota is gearing up to boost sales of its compact SUV, the Corolla Cross, in Europe for the year 2025. The company has readied a refreshed version, as depicted in the accompanying image. The update primarily enhances the vehicle's aesthetics, with a special focus on a more contemporary front look and updated bumpers.

As is customary with a facelift, the wheels have been redesigned and the model name has been moved to the rear above the license plate. However, the interior has not seen any significant upgrades.

The 2025 model of the Corolla

The selection includes the athletic GR SPORT model, adorned with numerous distinct features designed to enhance its sporty appeal. The hybrid engines, at 140 and 197 horsepower, are anticipated to remain largely unchanged. Is this SUV slated for a European launch in 2025? Logic suggests it will, and the pricing is likely to be in line with current figures.

Toyota's Upcoming Release for 2025

Toyota has been tight-lipped about their plans for next year, but the buzz is all about the launch of the latest RAV4 iteration. The question on everyone's lips is whether the new model will be unveiled or not. It's high time for its introduction, given that the current version has been around since 2019 without any significant updates – not that it was in desperate need of any.

Since there have been no spy shots of the vehicle yet, it's unclear whether it will resemble the C-HR, be a downsized version of the Land Cruiser, or have a unique design altogether, so we'll just have to wait and see.

Upcoming 2025 Model of the Toyota

We are also in the dark about the engines. However, it's highly probable that the existing hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains will be advanced, becoming more powerful and efficient.

We also anticipate larger dimensions (the current RAV4 measures 4.60 meters in length) which should result in increased space and cargo capacity. Regrettably, it's expected that the prices will exceed the current starting price in Germany, which is 40,990 euros.

The 2025 Toyota Camry

The hybrid sedan, while not available in countries such as Germany, is set to hit other European markets featuring a fresh design. Noteworthy are its C-shaped headlights, updated wheels that go up to 18 inches, and a spoiler that's incorporated into the trunk lid.

The latest, ninth iteration of the Toyota Camry has undergone significant updates. While it continues to be built on the same TNGA-K platform as its eighth-generation predecessor, the vehicle now boasts an enhanced suspension system, complete with new shock absorbers and fine-tuned settings. Toyota is touting this new configuration as offering "enhanced responsiveness and nimble handling."

2025 Model of the Toyota Cam

The hybrid powertrain merges a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with electric motors. The front-wheel-drive model is equipped with two electric motors, producing a total of 228 horsepower. In the all-wheel-drive model, a third motor is added to the rear axle, boosting the total output to 235 horsepower.

Toyota Supra GRMN 2025

The elite model of the athletic GR Supra is set to satisfy our cravings for sportiness and excitement. The GRMN (Gazoo Racing Masters of the Nürburgring) was spotted in a frenzy of testing as a camouflaged prototype at the Nürburgring in 2023.

At the time, there was discussion about deploying the 3-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder from the BMW M2, M3, and M4 for the Asian sports car, which would generate nearly 500 horsepower. Currently, the most powerful GR Supra available reaches 340 horsepower, also equipped with a BMW engine.

Photo Gallery: Spy Shots of the Toyota Supra GRMN

It stands to reason that there would be a slightly different design and a unique tuning, featuring lower ground clearance and a firmer suspension, along with more powerful brakes. Let's hope that this project comes to fruition.

Published

on

By

The 2025 Kia EV9, a three-row electric SUV, continues into its next year of production with no significant updates but sees a $700 hike in the cost for the Light Long Range variant.

The starting cost of the 2025 Kia EV9 is $56,225, which includes the compulsory $1,325 fee for delivery, for its Light Standard Range variant that comes equipped with a 76.1-kWh battery. If you opt for the Light Long Range, you get a bigger 99.8-kWh battery, and the price rises to $61,225, destination fee included. Both versions of the Light model feature a rear-wheel drive setup powered by a single motor. The Light Standard Range offers 215 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque with the smaller battery, while the Long Range version delivers 201 horsepower.

Upcoming 2025 Kia Electric Vehicle Model

The remaining models include the Wind, priced at $65,225, the Land at $71,225, and the GT-Line at $75,225, all equipped with the more substantial battery and a dual-motor all-wheel drive system. Each of the all-wheel drive variants boasts a power output of 379 horsepower. However, the GT-Line stands out with its torque enhanced from the usual 443 pound-feet to 516 pound-feet, resulting in a quicker acceleration time that takes it from 0 to 60 mph in a swift 5.0 seconds, on par with a performance sports car.

The maximum distance the Light Long Range can travel on a single charge, as assessed by the EPA, remains at 304 miles. The Light versions with a less powerful battery have a reduced range of 230 miles, whereas the Wind and Land versions can go up to 280 miles. The GT-Line versions feature bigger wheels which result in a reduction of their range by 10 miles.

Upcoming 2025 Kia Electric Vehicle Model

Slated for a 2024 release, the EV9—Kia's second vehicle crafted from the exclusive E-GMP EV architecture—has garnered significant interest from critics and buyers alike. It earned the title of Green Car Reports Best Car To Buy 2024, and the surge in initial interest resulted in dealers hiking up prices.

The latest batch of 2025 vehicles has been called back for a fix due to a glitch in the software that might lead to malfunctioning digital dashboard displays. This corrective action, extending to certain 2024 models as well, marks the second recall for the EV9 in a short span. Previously, there was a recall for a different software problem concerning the advanced remote-controlled parking feature.

Arkansas’s Hidden Treasure: Massive Lithium Reserves Could Power EV Future

Published

on

By

A study led by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) suggests that a lithium reserve in the southwestern region of Arkansas has the potential to meet the worldwide demand for electric vehicle batteries ninefold. This reserve is estimated to contain around 19 million tons of lithium.

Research involving water sampling and advanced computer analysis suggests that the Smackover Formation could contain anywhere from five to 19 million tons of lithium. The US Geological Survey points out that even the conservative figures surpass nine times the anticipated worldwide need for lithium in electric vehicle batteries by 2030, according to forecasts by the International Energy Agency.

The USGS has pinpointed the Smackover Formation as a possible lithium reserve in the United States.

Additionally, the Smackover Formation stretches beneath regions of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, standing as evidence of a prehistoric ocean from the Jurassic era. This geological layer is recognized for its abundant oil and bromine reserves; however, the USGS posits that lithium could potentially be mined for commercial use from the highly saline water that emerges as a byproduct of oil and natural gas retrieval processes.

According to the United States Geological Survey, over a quarter of the lithium used in the U.S. is imported. Although the U.S. possesses significant lithium reserves, domestic production declined in the 1990s due to economic constraints. As reported by CNBC in 2022, Australia, Chile, and China are the primary sources for over 80% of the world's lithium supply, with China dominating the market by handling over 50% of the lithium processing and refining activities globally.

BMW's round battery units

The United States Geological Survey has calculated that the lithium present in the waste brine from oil production in Arkansas could potentially meet the entire lithium requirement of the United States. This discovery aligns with President Biden's initiative to establish a homegrown supply chain for electric vehicles. The government has invoked the Defense Production Act to boost the production of lithium and related battery components. Moreover, it has incorporated criteria for sourcing raw materials into the federal tax credit for electric vehicles as a reinforcement to this objective.

Initiatives have been undertaken to reinitiate lithium extraction in regions with a history of production. In the year 2019, a mining firm applied for licenses to establish a novel lithium excavation site in the vicinity of Charlotte, North Carolina. This area was a hotbed for lithium mining activities, which persisted until the 1980s.

Stellantis Amps Up EV Game: Testing Solid-State Batteries in Dodge Charger Daytona Fleet for Future-Ready Performance

Published

on

By

Stellantis has plans to conduct trials of solid-state battery technology in their Dodge Charger Daytona electric models. These battery cells, supplied by the Massachusetts company Factorial, will be integrated into a group of these vehicles for testing purposes beginning in 2026, as disclosed by both firms this past Wednesday.

The experimental group of vehicles will facilitate the appraisal of Factorial's innovations and ascertain how they fare under actual driving scenarios, according to the companies involved. Additionally, this will assist Stellantis in determining the feasibility of incorporating Factorial's solid-state batteries into its electric vehicle-centric STLA Large framework, which is the foundation for the Charger, Jeep Wagoneer S, and other future vehicles, for mass-market production.

Revolutionized battery cell with a factorial structure

This move represents another progression towards bringing Factorial's battery technology to the market, a process that has been gradually progressing in recent years. In 2022, Factorial started supplying automotive manufacturers with prototype batteries for evaluation. Then, in 2023, the company launched what it claimed to be the biggest solid-state electric vehicle battery facility in the United States, located in a suburb of Boston.

In 2021, Stellantis allocated $75 million towards Factorial. This company also garnered investment from other car manufacturers such as Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz. Factorial, at the beginning of this year, made it known that their joint effort with Mercedes on the Solstice solid-state battery cell could potentially increase the distance electric vehicles can travel by up to 80% due to improved energy density.

2024 Model of the Dodge Charger Daytona

Several other car manufacturers are investing in the development of solid-state battery technology as well. Volkswagen has teamed up with QuantumScape in this endeavor, and both Nissan and Toyota are pursuing their own in-house projects to advance the technology. Toyota has recently announced its intention to start producing solid-state batteries in 2026 or shortly thereafter, although initially, it is expected that these batteries will be produced in limited quantities for electric vehicles with low production volumes.

In other news, the anticipated Charger Daytona is slated to hit the market by the year's close, carrying a starting price tag of $61,590 for the basic R/T variant. It is anticipated to deliver a driving distance of 317 miles on a single charge, thanks to its 100.5-kwh battery capacity, out of which 93.5-kwh is effectively utilizable and is made up of standard lithium-ion cells.

Feds Launch Probe into Tesla’s Full Self-Driving System After Multiple Crashes and a Fatality

Published

on

By

The US federal authorities are probing Tesla's autonomous driving feature due to a series of four collisions, with one resulting in death, as per information from Reuters. The inquiry into the Full Self-Driving system is being conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The probe, serving as a preliminary measure prior to a potential safety recall by the NHTSA, encompasses electric vehicles such as the 2016-2024 Tesla Model S and Model X that have the optional Full Self-Driving feature, in addition to the 2017-2024 Tesla Model 3, the 2020-2024 Tesla Model Y, and the 2023-2024 Tesla Cybertruck. This essentially includes all models that offer the Full Self-Driving option.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has initiated an inquiry following four incidents involving activated systems amidst poor visibility due to factors like bright sunlight, fog, or dust in the air. The agency mentioned a particular incident from November 2023 where a person on foot lost their life in Rimrock, Arizona, after being hit by a 2021 Tesla Model Y. Additionally, another collision that resulted in an injury is also under scrutiny.

The dashboard of the Tesla Model 3 is undergoing testing in Autopilot mode by the IIHS. [Image courtesy of IIHS]

The inquiry will encompass an examination of the Full Self-Driving feature's competence in recognizing and correctly reacting to compromised visibility on roads. Additionally, the NHTSA is inquiring with Tesla about any past incidents of comparable nature that happened during poor visibility, and if there have been any modifications to the Full Self-Driving that could influence its performance under these circumstances, as reported by Reuters.

Tesla's official site admits that despite being called "Full Self-Driving," their system still needs the driver to monitor the vehicle, and it doesn't render the car completely self-sufficient. At present, the market doesn't offer any cars to consumers that are capable of driving themselves.

Upcoming 2024 version of the Tesla Model Y, presented by Tesla, Inc.

In 2023, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration demanded that Tesla initiate a recall to limit the functionality of its Full Self-Driving feature, citing concerns over potential safety hazards. Subsequently, Tesla revealed that they had received subpoenas from the U.S. Justice Department regarding their Full Self-Driving and Autopilot technologies. Despite these issues, Tesla still markets Full Self-Driving as an add-on for its vehicles, currently priced at $8,000, which is a reduction from the previous peak price of $15,000 in 2022.

The probe is underway amid Tesla head Elon Musk's increased focus on self-driving technology. Just recently, Musk made a splash with the unveiling of a self-driving Cybercab priced at $30,000 with two seats, promising a release before 2027, along with the introduction of a 20-seater self-driving shuttle named Robovan.
