The Grandland, which utilizes the multi-energy STLA Medium platform, comes in various powertrains including a mild hybrid petrol engine and a plug-in hybrid. However, this discussion will be centered on contrasting the latest electric vehicles from Opel with those from Smart.
Exterior
The latest Opel Grandland has undergone a design transformation, now boasting increased dimensions with an overall length of 4.65 meters. Meanwhile, the distance between the wheels, or wheelbase, stands at 2.78 meters.
The front design has been completely revamped, featuring the Vizor 3D grille that adds a sense of depth, the Intelli-Lux Pixel Matrix HD headlights, and for the first time, an illuminated Opel emblem, as well as the lettering on the rear hatch. Externally, all chrome detailing has been removed.
The Smart #5, on the other hand, doesn't draw inspiration from previous models and opts for an even more robust styling compared to the smaller #1 and #3, featuring a commanding design that straddles the line between an SUV and an off-road vehicle, complete with horizontally aligned lighting assemblies at the front and rear.

The 4.70 meter length confirms that this Smart model is quite sizeable, verging on the dimensions of the C-Segment. Additionally, its wheelbase spans 2.90 meters, exceeding that of the Grandland, while its height remains quite comparable.
Cabin Interior
The interior of the latest Opel Grandland is replete with digital displays, evidenced by a 12.3-inch digital dashboard and a sizable 16-inch central infotainment screen in the driver's area.
The dashboard, which has a pronounced horizontal layout, extends into the doors, which are equipped with built-in air vents, and complements the rest of the angular interior design, featuring upholstery made from recycled materials and seats certified by AGR (Campaign for Healthier Backs).
The latest Grandland model comes equipped with multiple storage compartments inside, offering a total space of 35 liters, including an illuminated "Pixelbox" for wireless smartphone charging. Additionally, it boasts a rear luggage area capable of holding up to 1,614 liters. The rear seats can be conveniently folded down in a 40:20:40 split to accommodate various loading needs.

Within the Smart #5, which focuses on high-end fixtures and technology, there exists a dazzling array of screens. This includes a 25.6-inch augmented reality head-up display, a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and two expansive 13-inch 2.5K AMOLED displays that extend across the dashboard to the passenger side. The voice assistant delivers quick response times, thanks to the power of the advanced AMD V2000 chip.
The remainder of the dashboard and interior features a curved design with premium touches such as Zero-Gravity seats that can recline up to 121 degrees, are upholstered in leather, and come equipped with curtain airbags, cushion airbags, and safety belts embedded in the backrest.
Additionally, the rear section features heated leather seats, an LED ambient lighting system that offers a palette of 256 colors, and a high-end Sennheiser Signature Sound System that includes 20 speakers and comes with a portable speaker. The rear trunk space can accommodate up to 1,530 liters, while the front trunk provides an extra 72 liters of storage capacity.

Drives
Opel has coined the term "native BEV" to describe the STLA Medium platform with a 400-volt electrical system, which is identical to that of the new Peugeot 3008. Based on this platform and the absence of additional official details, one can speculate on the potential battery capacity, power, and driving range.
The electric Opel Grandland is available with two battery size options: 73 kWh and 98 kWh. Depending on the chosen battery, the WLTP-certified driving range will vary from 504 kilometers to a maximum of 700 kilometers.

The vehicle, equipped with a 73-kWh battery, features front-wheel drive and a motor with 213 horsepower, offering a WLTP range between 504 and 524 km. Meanwhile, the version with a 98-kWh battery also has front-wheel drive but comes with a stronger 231 horsepower motor and boasts a range of up to 700 km.
The future might see the launch of the Grandland featuring a 4×4 electric powertrain with dual motors totaling 326 horsepower, equipped with a 73-kWh battery, and capable of covering a distance of 525 kilometers on a single charge.
Additionally, there is the Grandland mild hybrid featuring a 1.2-liter 48V gasoline engine with 136 horsepower, and the plug-in hybrid variant that offers an electric range of 85 kilometers.

The Smart #5 is built on an 800-volt SEA platform and is equipped with a 100-kWh battery, which allows it to travel 740 kilometers per charge according to the Chinese CLTC certification cycle. No further details have been officially released.
The European specifications for the new Smart's engines and WLTP range have yet to be disclosed. However, for an insight into what to expect, one can examine the models currently being manufactured and sold in China.
Chinese buyers have the option to purchase it with a single motor and rear-wheel drive that produces either 340 or 363 horsepower, or with dual motors and all-wheel drive that deliver a total of 587 horsepower (split as 224/363 horsepower) or 645 horsepower (split as 224/421 horsepower).
Costs
Currently, there are no set introductory prices for the two new SUV models. Opel will release the Grandland's pricing details once ordering commences in October 2024, with deliveries anticipated by the year's end. It's expected that the new electric vehicle will be priced above the existing Grandland plug-in hybrid's cost of 48,850 euros.
There's not much fresh information regarding the pricing and release date of the Smart #5, which is expected to arrive in Europe in 2025. However, it's plausible to assume that the starting price might exceed the 51,118 euros charged for the smaller, more athletic Smart #3 Brabus.
