Divisive Decision: Ducati CEO Acknowledges Marquez-Rossi Rivalry Influences Controversial Signing
Marc Marquez is seen as "controversial"; Ducati's CEO implies past conflicts with Valentino Rossi
"His skill is undeniable, yet many have strong views about his career history"
The CEO of Ducati has acknowledged that bringing Marc Marquez on board is a controversial move, hinting at the tension between Marquez and Valentino Rossi.
Next season, Marquez is set to join the official Ducati team, partnering with Pecco Bagnaia as a leading figure in the Italian manufacturer's MotoGP initiative.
He is well-known for his rivalry with Italy's beloved figure, Rossi.
Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali described Marquez's decision as controversial during an interview with Sky Italia.
"His history, his riding style, and past events make him much more significant in Italy compared to the rest of the world."
According to what I read, everyone agrees on his talent, but many have distinct views about his background.
The tale involves Rossi's infamous claim that Marquez helped Jorge Lorenzo secure the championship title in 2015.
However, Ducati could not overlook the remarkable performance Marquez is showing with Gresini on a last year's model.
He stated that he would not join another Ducati satellite team, even if they provided him with factory equipment, which influenced the manufacturer to choose him for their official 2025 roster.
Jorge Martin did not secure his previous deal and has now joined Aprilia.
Domenicali stated that making the decision was extremely tough for them because of their deep affection for Martin.
"Ultimately, the decision came down to either Marc or Jorge, who has been a part of our team for a long time and possesses great strength."
"Only the future can reveal if this choice was correct."
Key factor in 2027 bike development
The selection of Marquez, who will be the second-oldest rider in MotoGP next year, has led to claims that Ducati has abandoned its strategy of nurturing homegrown talent like Bagnaia.
Martin departed for Aprilia, while Enea Bastianini moved to KTM, and the Pramac team switched to Yamaha following Marquez’s advancement to the red team.
Domenicali refutes claims that Ducati has shifted its focus away from the future.
“For a while now, we have decided to concentrate on nurturing young talents like Pecco and helping them develop,” he stated.
"When they develop into skilled talents and world champions, it becomes difficult for newcomers to secure a spot. As a result, it was unavoidable that we couldn't retain everyone."
“This is also due to the decision to concentrate on creating the new bicycle set to be released in 2027.”
"Although it isn't often discussed, it must be executed with great precision."
"Therefore, it is crucial to consider our actions in this wonderful championship not only for the following year but also for the long-term future."
“I've been informed that our approach concerning young people is no longer in place.
"In my opinion, the evidence disproves this claim – Fermin Aldeguer is among the up-and-coming racers and will join our team next year."
"Therefore, we plan to stick to our current strategy and even strengthen it."
Aldeguer is the sole newcomer scheduled to join MotoGP next year.
After securing a deal with Ducati, he will become a member of either the VR46 team or the Gresini team.
