Disheartened Sergio Perez describes how Carlos Sainz was responsible for their collision in Baku
Sergio Perez's account of the incident with Carlos Sainz
Sergio Perez described his accident at the Azerbaijani Grand Prix as "a catastrophe" for the Red Bull team.
Perez and Ferrari's driver, Carlos Sainz, crashed into the barrier while contending for a podium finish on the second-to-last lap.
Charles Leclerc had earlier defended against Perez's effort to pass him.
Perez, expressing his frustration to Sky Sports in Baku, said, "I think Carlos reacted too swiftly to catch Charles' slipstream."
"It was an inopportune moment."
"It led to a major accident."
Officials looked into the accident but decided against implementing any measures.
Perez’s failure to finish the race helped McLaren surpass Red Bull in the constructors’ championship.
"It's truly unfortunate that this occurred," Perez lamented.
"I don't even know what to say. This is a catastrophe for the championship."
"It's a catastrophe for both of our weekends to conclude this way, especially since we had much more at stake."
Max Verstappen ended up in fifth place after a new configuration on his RB20 didn't work out as planned.
The upcoming race will take place in Singapore, a location where Perez claimed victory two years prior.
"It's somewhat reassuring," he remarked. "However, we still have tasks ahead of us."
“Today we observed with Max that a minor adjustment in the setup can get you into the optimal range swiftly.
"A lot of tasks remain ahead."
Red Bull found it even harder to match McLaren's performance after Perez's accident forced him out of the race.
It also took away a rare opportunity for Perez to end up in front of Verstappen.
Throughout the season, the Mexican driver has faced ongoing criticism and questions regarding his compatibility with the car.
