BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé (2025): Details on the Revamp
The new 1 Series will once again have a sport sedan variant.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé has always been a more stylish counterpart to the 1 Series from its inception. However, the rather bulky rear design didn’t appeal to all tastes. This is set for a change: Alongside the extensively updated "new" 1 Series, we can expect a refreshed 2 Series Gran Coupé.
The second model generation of the four-door vehicle introduces a completely revamped lineup of powertrains, advanced chassis technology, and systems for semi-automated driving and parking. We had the privilege of getting an early look at the series…

Exterior
The exterior of the upcoming BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has undergone a significant refresh. It shares a resemblance to the 1 Series at the front end, but it's the dynamically elongated profile and robustly designed rear that really give it an edgy appearance. The wide grille, positioned just below the headlights, flaunts a new pattern of vertical and diagonal bars, and the expansive lower air intake adds to the BMW’s signature assertive road presence.
Standard LED headlights featuring vertical components for daytime running lights and turn signals are available, as well as optional adaptive LED headlights with glare-free matrix high beams and cornering lights.
The profile of the vehicle is characterized by a lengthy hood, compact overhangs, and a smoothly sloping roofline, whereas the rear end appears more contemporary than before with its ample surface design and sleek lighting. The overall look is more elegant, despite the creases that hark back to the previous model. Notably, as with the 1 Series, there's a new number placement near the rear side window.
Interior
Inside, the 2 Series shows only slight variations from the 1 Series. It features the latest version of the control system with QuickSelect, which is built on BMW's Operating System 9, and offers access to digital services like video streaming and in-car gaming. The system is designed to operate fully through touch and voice commands, which, as previously seen in the 1 Series, didn't always perform flawlessly. The cabin includes dynamically illuminated trim strips made of milled aluminum, a BMW Curved Display, and a redesigned gear selector.
The space available is quite generous, and even in the rear, seating is comfortable for this vehicle class. However, the lower roofline slightly reduces headroom for taller individuals. The newly designed sports seats in the front provide a snug fit without being uncomfortable. This hasn't always been the case with BMW. Standard features also include seat heating and electrically adjustable settings.
Engines
At the forefront of the lineup is the BMW M235 xDrive Gran Coupé, equipped with a four-cylinder engine capable of 221 kW (300 horsepower), sprinting to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. This model comes standard with an adaptive sports suspension and sports steering, along with an intelligent all-wheel drive system. There's also an optional M Technology Package aimed at enhancing track performance, which includes additional weight-saving features, 19-inch forged alloy wheels, and a high-performance compound braking system.
The range of engines available at launch includes upgraded four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, delivering 125 kW (170 hp) in the new BMW 220 Gran Coupé, 120 kW (163 hp) in the new 220d Gran Coupé, and 110 kW (150 hp) in the new 218d Gran Coupé. Note that the additional 'i' at the end is no longer used.
All engines come standard with a 7-speed Steptronic transmission featuring dual clutch, and the powertrains of the 220 Gran Coupé and 220d Gran Coupé are electrified using 48-volt mild-hybrid technology.
The new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé is anticipated to offer enhanced agility, steering accuracy, and cornering dynamics due to increased rigidity in the body structure and suspension mounting. Upgrades to the suspension system include improved kinematics and a novel shock absorber technology. Standard features also encompass a wheel slip limitation system positioned close to the actuators, a consolidated braking system, and lightweight 17-inch alloy wheels.
Latest from BMW:
Advanced systems for semi-automated driving and parking come standard. Included in the base model are the Driving Assistant featuring forward collision warning, lane departure alert, exit warning, and traffic sign recognition, as well as the Parking Assistant with a reversing assistant. Additional options include the steering and lane control assistant, the automatic speed limit assistant, and the route control feature.
Launch and Cost
The new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is being produced at the BMW Group Plant in Leipzig, with its launch scheduled to commence in March 2025. The manufacturer has yet to comment on the pricing.
