Daniel Ricciardo’s Controversial F1 Farewell: Brundle Critiques “Half-Hearted” Exit Amid Ethical Debate
Martin Brundle expresses doubts over Daniel Ricciardo's anticipated departure from Red Bull, calling it "lukewarm and perplexing."
Martin Brundle described Daniel Ricciardo's anticipated last Formula 1 appearance at the Singapore Grand Prix as "lukewarm and perplexing."
Ricciardo, racing for RB, concluded the Singapore race in 18th place, opting for a late pit stop to switch to fresh soft tyres. This move enabled him to record the fastest lap, thereby preventing Lando Norris and the McLaren team from securing an additional point.
This strategy, sparking ethical concerns, prompted McLaren to request an investigation into the connection between Red Bull and RB, aiding Max Verstappen in his continuous title fight with Norris.
In his post-race column for Sky, former F1 driver who has since become a commentator, Brundle, expressed that the event left him perplexed.
"Sergio Perez managed to finish in 10th place for Red Bull, climbing up from 13th on the starting grid, marking another letdown for the team. Brundle pointed out that this ongoing issue poses a significant challenge for Red Bull as they head into 2025."
The sister squad of RB graciously allowed Daniel Ricciardo to pit for new tyres towards the race's conclusion, enabling him to secure the quickest lap time. Although this achievement did not award him any points in the championship standings, it crucially deprived Norris and McLaren of a valuable point. McLaren has voiced grievances over what they perceive as unjust strategies, given that their primary competitors have the advantage of operating two teams in the competition.
Daniel's final appearance in Formula 1 for the foreseeable future, and possibly the last time ever, was marked by a somewhat lukewarm and perplexing departure from his team. In a gesture of goodbye, his supporters honored him with the Driver of the Day award, culminating his career with 257 races, 8 victories, 3 pole positions, and 32 podium finishes. Along the way, he left behind countless moments of joy and a legion of delighted fans.
"Congratulations and best wishes for his future endeavors; he's an outstanding individual and a top-tier racer."
"Liam Lawson is set to inherit his RB position from Austin, presenting him with an opportunity to demonstrate his worthiness for a spot on the 2025 grid with one of the Red Bull squads."
It is anticipated that Ricciardo will be succeeded at RB by Red Bull's backup driver, Liam Lawson, ahead of the United States Grand Prix scheduled for October.
