Daniel Ricciardo comments on his altercation with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo addresses the collision with Haas at the Italian Grand Prix in F1
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he apologized to Nico Hulkenberg after they collided on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo was contending with Nico Hulkenberg in the middle of the field during the first lap of Sunday's race at Monza when they collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but then he experienced a collision. This incident caused Hulkenberg's Haas to veer onto the dirt, allowing his teammate Kevin Magnussen to overtake him.
The Australian driver initially received a five-second penalty for the incident. However, this was followed by a 10-second penalty when one of his mechanics mistakenly touched his car during the pitstop while he was serving the first penalty.
Ricciardo finished a challenging race at his home track for the Red Bull team in 13th place.
"At the end of the day, our speed just wasn't up to par today, even before considering the penalties," he remarked.
“We gave it a shot, and I was having fun with the close racing at the beginning, but I collided with Nico in Turn 8."
"After the race, I had a conversation with him. I initially believed we had enough space, but then I felt the impact, realizing I hadn't given him sufficient room. I expressed my apologies to him."
"It's challenging because you put in a lot of effort, but even the tiniest differences can have a big impact."
"The car performed satisfactorily afterward, and we exerted maximum effort with the resources available. From Friday afternoon until today, I endeavored to extract the utmost performance from the vehicle."
"From my perspective, I’m feeling much improved this weekend, and we nearly earned some points."
Tsunoda Ends Race Disappointed
RB team member Laurent Mekies stated that the Italian Grand Prix was heavily influenced by Hulkenberg. A crash between Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda led to the Japanese racer's early exit from the competition.
"I'm really upset; it's unfortunate that my race ended just a few laps in because of a collision with Nico," Tsunoda stated.
"I attempted to give him plenty of room, but it appeared he froze, lost control, and collided with me."
“Regrettably, we had to withdraw the car from the race due to damage sustained to the floor.
“I immediately noticed something was wrong and attempted to keep going, but the car was slipping all over the place and I just couldn’t control it.”
"We're heading to Baku and Singapore next, and our car is expected to do well on those tracks. We're optimistic about having successful weekends coming up."
Mekies is upset about the Tsunoda incident because it cost him important time on the track with the newly upgraded RB car that was brought to Monza.
"Regarding today’s race, Hulkenberg seemed to set the pace. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing Hulkenberg off the track, and later, Nico collided with Yuki, which ultimately led to our car's retirement," he stated.
"The most exasperating part about Yuki's retirement is missing out on 40 laps, which would have helped us better grasp the new updates we implemented."
Daniel was subsequently given an additional 10-second penalty due to improper execution of the initial penalty.
"We must reassess our procedures in light of this situation and take lessons from the error made today. Although incidents like this do occur, our pit crew has overall performed outstandingly this season."
