Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer were questioned by Sky's political editor Beth Rigby along with a public audience in the program titled The Battle For Number 10.

Here, Sky News examines the stances of the political leaders on major topics during the general election campaign and analyzes what the statistics indicate.

Living Expenses

The Labour Party often asserts that families have experienced a total decline of £5,883 in their financial situation over the past five years.

However, the fact-checking group Full Fact highlighted that the statistic fails to consider a sufficiently wide range of products, as well as variations in salaries or welfare benefits during that period.

Taking these elements into account, the real disposable income has actually dropped by approximately £166, according to findings from the independent Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).

The Conservative Party asserts that Labour's policies would result in families losing £2,000. However, these figures are speculative since Labour has not released its manifesto, and the Conservatives are assuming that Labour would finance their plans through taxation instead of potentially taking on debt.

Inflation data offers comfort, yet does not overshadow the persistent cost of living issue.

Associated Subjects:

Mr. Sunak cites his management of the COVID furlough program during his tenure as Chancellor and the recent decrease in inflation to 2.3%, a decline from the record peak of 11.1% in October 2022, as key achievements in his record.

However, outside influences played to the Prime Minister's advantage.

Despite government interventions, the most severe price increases resulting from the conflict in Ukraine, particularly affecting fuel and food, have subsided.

While a decrease in inflation indicates a slowdown in the rate at which prices increase, it does not imply that prices are dropping. Rather, even minimal inflation suggests that prices continue to climb from an already elevated

According to data from the Office for National Statistics, wages are now rising faster than inflation, although there remains a historical discrepancy between the overall rise in prices compared to wages.

This, along with persistently elevated interest rates that raise the cost of mortgages and additional borrowing, explains why individuals continue to experience financial strain.

National Health Service

As of last August, the number of people on the NHS England waiting list reached a high of 7.8 million, but it has slightly decreased to 7.5 million since then.

However, critics often highlight that the figure remains 300,000 appointments greater than the 7.2 million recorded in January 2023, the time when Mr. Sunak first committed to reducing it.

Labour has pledged to reduce the wait times for NHS services to no more than four months by the end of their initial term in office, aligning with existing NHS benchmarks.

The plan includes increasing the number of appointments and procedures by 40,000 each week, with additional slots in the evenings and on weekends, as well as acquiring additional medical equipment.

Analysis from Sky News suggests that these actions might not be sufficient to close the disparity.

According to the think tank The Health Foundation, an extra five NHS appointments are required to eliminate a single treatment pathway from the waiting list.

Based on the current conversion rate, the 40,000 extra appointments provided by Labour will result in 8,000 fewer people on the waiting list, as depicted by the orange bar in the chart above, which is still significantly below what is needed to meet the demand.

Movement of Pop

The two leaders are eager to portray themselves as strict on immigration issues, highlighting that the unprecedented surge in net migration, which peaked at 685,000 last year following Brexit in 2015, is excessive.

Mr. Sunak asserts that his strategies, encompassing the contentious Rwanda deportation scheme and an undefined limit on net migration figures, provide the solution.

However, as previously highlighted by Sky News, such limits have not been successful historically.

Ex-Prime Ministers David Cameron and Theresa May each pledged to limit net migration to under 100,000. Neither succeeded.

The policy concerning Rwanda covers merely a small percentage of the total figures, yet it comes with a substantial cost.

According to the National Audit Office (NAO), initial estimates have already pegged the cost at £370 million, even before any removal activities begin, with potential expenses rising up to £661 million.

It aims to prevent small boat crossings, yet these constitute just a small portion of asylum applications. Last year, asylum seekers made up only 81,000 of the migrants, in contrast to 432,000 workers and 379,000 students.

Labour has announced plans to immediately abolish the program, whereas the Conservatives' history of managing the program has been less than stellar, leaving the ultimate cost up in the air.

In 2023, out of 229,000 worker visas issued, almost two-thirds (64%) were allocated to healthcare positions such as nursing and caregiving.

The Conservatives claim that their agreement with Albania demonstrates the effectiveness of deterrence, citing a 90% decrease in numbers.

Labour has committed to overhauling pathways for resettlement to prevent exploitation by criminal organizations.

Environmental Goals and Carbon Neutr

A major point of contention is the decision to increase oil and gas extraction from the North Sea.

Prime Minister Sunak aims to fully utilize the remaining resources. The Labour Party has declared it would halt the granting of permits for new initiatives.

Despite its opposition, if victorious in the elections, the Labour Party would not cancel the permits previously granted by the Conservatives, which have been subject to environmentalist criticism.

The manifesto from the Conservative party states that increased extraction will "supply energy to residences and enterprises nationwide."

However, the situation is being exaggerated; after all, there are scant oil and gas reserves remaining in the North Sea.

The chart depicted above illustrates the potential minimal or substantial gains the UK could achieve from new licenses, highlighting that the decision carries more symbolic weight.

The Conservative Party claims it supports renewable energy sources, yet it has not effectively ended the de facto moratorium on onshore wind farms that it had pledged to lift. Meanwhile, the Labour Party has set a goal to increase the capacity of onshore wind energy to 35 gigawatts by the year

The Labour Party's proposal to close down North Sea oil wells is deterring major oil companies from initiating operations at current sites, potentially leading to the loss of thousands of jobs, according to the industry advocacy group Offshore Energies UK.

In truth, the parties share more common ground than certain members suggest.

Both support a type of unexpected profit tax until 2029, aim to make the majority or all of the electricity supply carbon-neutral by 2030, intend to increase electric vehicle usage, and plan to expand solar and offshore wind energy production.

Mistake on D-Day

It appears that those in Sunak's circle did not anticipate that leaving the D-Day events in Normandy ahead of schedule would be significant.

Yet, it indeed did attract criticism, not only from his fellow party members but also from Labour and the wider public.

Survey results have also been unfavorable.

A quick YouGov poll revealed that 65% of participants deemed the conduct entirely or partially unacceptable. This percentage increased to 75% among respondents aged 65 and older.

This was presented as a boon to the Labour Party
