Chinese Influencer ‘Crazy Xiaoyangge’ Under Investigation for Misleading Mooncake Claims: An Inside Look at Anhui Province’s Probe into E-commerce Practices
The popular Chinese social media personality Crazy Xiaoyangge has sparked an investigation into mooncakes with her claim that they are 'made in Hong Kong'. The regulatory authority in Anhui province is looking into allegations that the highest-grossing live-streamer has been deceiving customers during a Mid-Autumn Festival sale.
The Three Sheep Group, a business established by the influencer known as Zhang Qingyang, is currently under scrutiny for purportedly "deceiving customers" through a live-stream promotion, as per an announcement released by a local regulatory body in Hefei, the capital city of the eastern Anhui province, which is the company's headquarters.
The statement clarified that the legal proceedings will be guided by the findings of the investigation.
"The regulator further stated that any unlawful commercial practices detected in live-stream sales would be disciplined as per the law."
Zhang, also known as Crazy Xiaoyangge, which translates to "crazy little brother Yang" in English, is one of China's wealthiest internet celebrities. In 2023, he reportedly made 3.21 billion yuan (equivalent to US$450 million), based on a list compiled by the Guangdong E-commerce Summit Forum.
