China’s Budget EVs Conquer Spain and Advance in Europe, Despite Looming Tariffs and Trade Scrutiny
China's affordable electric vehicles dominate in Spain and are making progress in European markets. Even though they have an edge with their competitive pricing, potential tariffs and stringent trade regulations may hinder their expansion.
Following a test drive in his neighbor's electric vehicle (EV) – a model manufactured by MG Motor, a company based in Shanghai, Spanish taxi driver Jose was persuaded.
After being laid off from his well-paid position as an economic analyst amid the 2008 economic meltdown, he has been making a living by driving a taxi in Barcelona and London.
"Jose voiced his frustration, stating that the tariff is unjust for local customers grappling with rising prices. He questioned why the European Union doesn't introduce a similar tariff on vehicles from the United States. He believed that EU officials have neglected the interests of ordinary consumers, particularly those whose buying power has been diminished due to the pandemic."
