Charles Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Recent Upgrades Not Enough for Season-Long Dominance
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's latest improvements are ‘insufficient’ for ‘securing victories for the remainder of the season’
"Are these upgrades enough to secure race wins for the rest of the season? I don't believe so yet, but we have made significant progress in the right direction."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance further to reliably compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, allowing him to outpace McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second trip to the pits, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring that McLaren possessed the fastest vehicle at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major enhancement package for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at resolving their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the race at Monza, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution".
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco was uniquely suited to our car at that moment. Monza is another track that has its own distinct characteristics."
"There were many straight sections and few turns. We had a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we introduced another upgrade that I believe has brought us closer to McLaren. However, I don't think this will make us the leading car for the rest of the season on different tracks."
"We still have plenty to accomplish, but I'm truly pleased to have secured one here in Italy."
Despite facing challenges since the Monaco race, Leclerc is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered expectations, pointing to previous discussions of a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed excellently this weekend, but Baku might present a completely different challenge, and Singapore will be distinct as well. Therefore, we need to adjust our approach. We successfully adapted from Monaco to Montreal, but as demonstrated, the transition from Monaco to Montreal involved significant changes from one weekend to the next."
"We then experienced some of the toughest races of the season as we worked to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won't face another series of challenging races going forward, and I don't believe that will happen."
"However, it's crucial for both the team and the external expectations to remain grounded and not skyrocket from one race to the next, as that would be unrealistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to secure victories for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
