Charles Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Italian GP Upgrade Not Enough for Season-Long Dominance
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements are insufficient for securing victories for the remainder of the season. "Do we have what it takes to win races until the season ends? Not yet, but we've made significant progress."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance to consistently compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Charles Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, outperforming McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring McLaren's dominance as the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update at the Italian Grand Prix aimed at solving their problems with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to exercise caution.
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Since Monaco, we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's track was uniquely suited to our car at that moment. Similarly, Monza has its own unique characteristics."
"A significant number of straight sections and fewer turns characterized the track. We also used a specialized rear wing designed for this circuit, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we introduced another upgrade that I believe has narrowed the gap with McLaren, though I doubt it will make us the dominant car on other tracks for the remainder of the season."
"We still have a significant amount of work ahead of us, but I'm thrilled to have achieved this victory here in Italy."
Even though Leclerc has had a challenging time following the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized expectations, pointing to similar discussions about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"This weekend, we performed exceptionally well. However, Baku and Singapore are likely to present entirely different challenges. It's important for us to recalibrate our approach accordingly. We made significant adjustments moving from Monaco to Montreal, and the difference between those two weekends was substantial."
"We then experienced some of the most challenging races of the season, as we were trying to figure out the issues with our car. I hope we don't face another series of tough races moving forward, and I believe that won't happen."
"However, it's crucial for both the team and the outside world to avoid setting excessively high expectations from one race to the next since that wouldn't be realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes, we have. Is it sufficient to secure victories for the remainder of the season? I don't believe so at this point, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
