Celebrating a Decade: The Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept’s Impact Since its 2014 New York Auto Show Debut
Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept Marks Anniversary
At the New York Auto Show in April 2014, a near-production concept previewed the design of what would become a successful model
The setting is New York, USA, in the year 2014, during the nation’s premier auto show, under the leadership of President Barack Obama. Land Rover seizes the moment to unveil a concept vehicle that hints at the next generation of the Discovery. The design features futuristic lines, a stark contrast to its boxier predecessor.
The prototype, named Discovery Vision Concept, is showcased as a near-production model, closely resembling the vehicle set to be launched two years later.
More athletic than ever before
The concept driving the fifth generation of the Land Rover Discovery, including this particular prototype, was to develop a vehicle that remains fully prepared for any challenge and boasts excellent off-road capabilities. However, it now features a significantly sportier design and improved dynamic performance compared to its predecessors.
The final product is a seven-seater SUV featuring a robust front design, a notably upright rear section, and several unmistakable hallmarks of the iconic brand. Key characteristics include the split tailgate and the elevated roofline in the cargo area.

Celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, the study saw engineers opt for distinctive side wing doors—one of the few features that did not make it to the production model—along with a large, centrally divided glass roof equipped with ambient lighting.
In 2014, the Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept featured side doors equipped with a radio.

Production Model Released Two Years Later
The production model of the Discovery 5 made its global debut to the press in the United Kingdom on September 28, 2016. Later that year, it was showcased to the public at the Paris Motor Show. Sales in Europe commenced in February 2017.
Throughout its extensive career, which continues to this day, the British off-road vehicle has undergone numerous updates. One notable update occurred in mid-2020, featuring significant technical advancements, such as a towing assist system that functions in reverse.
