Alonso Dismisses Newey Rumours: ‘No Excuses’ as Aston Martin Faces Uphill Battle
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about an upcoming announcement involving Adrian Newey this week.
"I don't like making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges.
Fernando Alonso asserts that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, as rumors persist about Adrian Newey's potential involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicated that Aston Martin might soon reveal the hiring of Newey.
Adrian Newey, who is currently serving as the chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. Following his departure, he will have the opportunity to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that he might join Aston Martin has intensified lately, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have subsided.
Alonso commented at Monza, "Right now, there are just rumors, and I believe it's not solely one person's responsibility to make improvements."
"It's about focusing on our current situation and what we are creating. We need to identify what is progressing well, what isn't, and work on better preparing for 2025."
Adrian Newey being free next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into a new Silverstone facility and secured a contract with Alonso that extends through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets upcoming regulatory standards.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disheartening.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. Alonso secured 11th place in the Italian Grand Prix, while his teammate Lance Stroll came in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We rely on our team, and both Lance and I are giving it our all every weekend.”
"During a weekend filled with inspiration, such as this one for me, I am certain it will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have consistently finished races very closely, typically within two or three seconds of each other, either just ahead or behind. This weekend was one of those times where I performed slightly better. I felt satisfied with the car and pushed it to its limits, possibly even beyond, which resulted in a P11 finish."
"Yeah, it's disappointing. We must remain patient and recognize that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe we can come to terms with not competing for a spot in the top four. Those leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, finding ourselves trailing Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we have to elevate our performance. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, “I believe we still have an opportunity to make adjustments.”
"Within four months, McLaren went from being in last place to securing a spot on the podium. This provides us with clear examples."
"Similarly, Mercedes began the season on an equal footing with us. We were on par with Mercedes for the initial four races, and they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will perform better in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that without an upgrade to the car, the current performance is inadequate.
"Performance in Monza was lacking. The same can be said for Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe that significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin are unlikely unless we introduce new components."
"That's the strategy. The team knows what's going on. Everyone is giving their all. So, yes, we stay together. We keep striving. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we were close to getting two points, and that's the challenge we face."
