Alonso Addresses Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin’s Continued Struggles: ‘More Than One Man Needed to Fix Things
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey's potential announcement this week
"I don't like making excuses," says Fernando Alonso amid Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, amid ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix suggest that Aston Martin might reveal the hiring of Newey in the next few days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently the chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year and will be available to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that Aston Martin could be his next team has intensified lately, while rumors of him joining Ferrari have faded.
Speaking at Monza, Alonso commented, “There are still just rumors, and I believe it’s not a task for just one individual to resolve.”
"It's primarily about our current situation and what we're creating. It's about recognizing which aspects are progressing positively, which ones are not, and aiming to better prepare for the year 2025."
If Newey is available next year, he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new Silverstone facility and secured a contract with Alonso that extends until the conclusion of 2026. The company will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that complies with the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. Fernando Alonso secured the 11th place at the Italian Grand Prix, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in the 19th spot.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do about it,” Alonso responded. “We rely on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are making every effort to perform at our best each weekend.”
"An inspired weekend like the one I'm experiencing now is bound to remain entirely anonymous."
“This year, Lance and I have been very close, often finishing just two or three seconds apart, whether he's in front or behind. Today was another one of those weekends where I had a slight edge. I felt satisfied with the car and pushed it perhaps beyond its limits, resulting in P11."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We need to be patient and recognize that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull, I believe we need to elevate our performance. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from being in last place to securing a podium finish within four months, providing a clear example of improvement."
“Mercedes had a similar beginning to us. In the first four races, we were on par with them, yet they've managed to secure three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will see any advancements in performance over the next several races
Alonso expressed frustration, stating that the current state of the car is inadequate and will remain so until an upgrade is implemented.
"Underperformed in Monza. Below par in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
“I believe that unless we introduce new components, significant changes are unlikely to occur in Baku, Singapore, or Austin.
"That's our strategy. The team understands what's at stake and is giving their all. We're staying united and continuing to push forward. Last weekend, we managed to secure one point. Today, we nearly got two points, and that’s the fight we’re in."
