Yamaha Eyes Moto2 Talent Alonso Lopez for Future Premier Class Leap Amid Pramac Project Expansion
Yamaha hints at considering Moto2 riders for upcoming Pramac initiative
"We can contemplate his promotion to the top tier when the appropriate moment arrives"
Yamaha has expressed enthusiasm for Alonso Lopez, though they refrained from officially stating if he will ascend to MotoGP status in the coming year.
The entry of the Pramac satellite squad, which will switch from Ducati to Yamaha in 2025, has resulted in the creation of two new slots in the racing lineup.
Several active MotoGP competitors are eyeing the extra Yamaha bikes, but emerging talents from Moto2 might also be in the running.
Lin Jarvis, the managing director of Yamaha, was inquired about the possibility of giving Lopez an opportunity.
"Who can say," he replied to Sky Italia.
"A couple of years back, we mentioned that he's a cyclist we're keen on."
"We are keeping an eye on his career progression, and when the appropriate moment arrives for him to advance to the premier class, we will consider it."
"We've recently finalized an agreement with Pramac, setting our sights on upcoming Moto2 competitors for future prospects."
"However, I'm uncertain whether now is the appropriate moment to proceed with that."
As of now, the MotoGP lineup for the upcoming season includes only one new entrant, with Ducati's Fermin Aldeguer being the sole confirmed newcomer.
Lopez, a 22-year-old from Spain, is currently competing in his fourth Moto2 season.
The rider from Speed Up Racing currently holds the fifth position in the Moto2 rankings.
Lopez clinched victory in the inaugural Moto2 Grand Prix of the season, held in Qatar.
Despite catching the eye of Yamaha MotoGP's top brass, other elite riders are likewise showing interest in the newly available motorcycles stemming from Pramac's choice to part ways with Ducati.
