Wolff Signals Mercedes Future with Antonelli, Confirms Sainz Not in 2025 Plans
Toto Wolff virtually assures Kimi Antonelli's addition following a conversation with Carlos Sainz
Does Toto Wolff's latest comments provide the strongest hint that Andrea Kimi Antonelli will be part of Mercedes?
Toto Wolff has made it clear to Carlos Sainz that Mercedes will not have a spot open next to George Russell for the Formula 1 season in 2025.
Wolff has suggested with considerable emphasis that Mercedes plans to recruit young talent Andrea Kimi Antonelli to fill the shoes of Lewis Hamilton.
During the weekend of the Canadian Grand Prix, Wolff mentioned to Sky Germany on Friday that Mercedes plans to focus on Antonelli.
Wolff has also disclosed that Mercedes has notified Sainz, allowing him to independently decide on his future instead of delaying.
"Wolff conveyed to Sky Germany that their focus is solely on Kimi, emphasizing the importance of investing in the future through young drivers."
"We are dedicated to supporting young drivers, and we have communicated this commitment to Carlos."
Mercedes has yet to reveal their complete list of drivers.
Antonelli is presently participating in the FIA Formula 2 series and won't celebrate his 18th birthday until August.
Subsequently, Wolff faced another inquiry about the matter during Sky Sports F1's broadcast following the qualifying session.
Once more, Wolff emphasized their intention not to delay Sainz, clearly suggesting that Antonelli is likely to be promoted for the 2025 season.
"Firstly, it's clear that Carlos has earned a prestigious position. He has performed remarkably well. However, from our perspective, we've decided to take a new direction aimed at transforming ourselves for the future, and Kimi Antonelli is certainly a key piece in this strategy."
"We haven't made a decision for the upcoming year, but we didn't wish to keep Carlos in limbo since he has to make his own choices. It’s only right. He’s performing exceptionally well."
