Wolff Declares F1 Title Race ‘Wide Open’ as Norris Dominates at Dutch GP
Toto Wolff believes the competition for the F1 championship remains completely undecided, following Lando Norris's overwhelming victory over his competitors.
"In my view, the battle for the constructors' championship is anyone's game, and it’s beneficial for Formula 1."
Toto Wolff is of the opinion that the competition for the F1 constructors' championship remains highly unpredictable following Lando Norris's dominant performance against McLaren's competitors at the Dutch Grand Prix, effectively leaving them in the dust.
Norris clinched his second professional win on Sunday, finishing more than 22 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen.
This indicates that Norris is currently trailing Verstappen by 70 points, with nine races remaining in the 2024 season.
Norris showcased a level of supremacy akin to Verstappen's performance the previous year, remarkably recording the quickest lap on tyres that had been used for 42 laps.
In a conversation with Crash.net and other media outlets on Sunday at Zandvoort, Wolff evaluated the current situation in the championship battle.
"He mentioned that McLaren has demonstrated, starting from last year in Austria, their ability to introduce enhancements to the vehicle that perfectly hit the mark."
"Seeing that today was truly remarkable. He essentially wiped out the entire field, clocking the quickest lap towards the end on hard tires that had seen 42 laps. The gap was a full twenty seconds."
"Wolff believes that the competition for the constructors' championship remains highly competitive, which he views as beneficial for Formula 1. While he feels Verstappen currently maintains a strong hold on the drivers' championship, Wolff notes that this could shift due to McLaren's recent performance improvements and Red Bull's challenges."
"The championship race for drivers seems to be somewhat dominated by Max at the moment, yet it remains thrilling to anticipate any potential shifts in dominance. It's also interesting to consider our own role in this dynamic, especially given our recent performances in the latest races," he further stated.
"I believe that if our car had been performing at a standard level, our final position might not have surpassed Norris, but it certainly would have placed us in a much more thrilling situation."
Mercedes faced challenges at the Dutch Grand Prix, securing the seventh and eighth positions.
Toto Wolff pointed out that the reduced practice sessions over the weekend, caused by adverse weather conditions, played a part in their performance decline.
Mercedes' latest floor design is also a topic for further examination and discussion.
