Williams Racing in Serious Talks with Carlos Sainz for 2025 Season: Aiming for World-Class Driver Line-Up
Williams acknowledges discussions with Carlos Sainz: "Our aim is to have two top-tier drivers…" Williams has confirmed they are engaging in conversations with Carlos Sainz.
James Vowles, the team principal at Williams, has verified that they have engaged in significant discussions with Carlos Sainz regarding a potential transfer for the 2025 Formula 1 season.
Sainz remains the most prominent figure available in the Formula 1 driver marketplace, following the narrowing of his options with the recent confirmation from Sergio Perez before the weekend's events.
The present driver for Ferrari seems to face two distinct choices – either team up with the Audi initiative alongside Sauber or Williams.
Sainz's opportunity to become a part of Mercedes appears minimal, with Toto Wolff showing a preference for Andrea Kimi Antonelli should the team fail to secure Max Verstappen's signature.
Williams might emerge as Sainz's top option, especially since they're set to utilize the Mercedes engine starting in 2026 – with indications that Mercedes could dominate the power unit competition under the upcoming regulations.
During his address at the Canadian Grand Prix on Friday, Vowles outlined the reasons behind Williams' interest in Sainz, highlighting this as a shift in strategy for the squad.
"Why choose Williams? Allow me to explain," he stated. "There's a purpose behind my presence here. Williams today is not the Williams we knew three years back.
"Our ongoing conversations with Carlos demonstrate a shift in our strategy. Our ambition is to have two elite drivers represent us in the future. We aim to signal to everyone that we are committed and serious about making the necessary investments to return to a leading position.
"By 2026, our car will be equipped with an exceptional power unit, possibly the finest in the field. We're looking forward to making an announcement soon. Over the past year, we've successfully recruited approximately 30 outstanding individuals from various teams to join our organization."
The global landscape is undergoing significant transformations, and individuals such as Carlos would play a pivotal role in shaping the broader context of our current state.
"Clearly, the distinction lies in his ability to decide if he wishes to be here or not, and that decision is his alone to make."
Williams is expected to maintain a robust roster regardless of Sainz's potential involvement.
Valtteri Bottas, who has emerged victorious in 10 races, is also strongly rumored to be in consideration for the position.
When inquired whether he believed Sainz was persuaded by Williams' offer, Vowles responded: "It's difficult to determine. In my view, he recognizes all the advantages. From my perspective, as a representative of Williams, it might seem straightforward for me to encourage joining us. However, ultimately, the choice is his to decide."
