Spanish Grand Prix Driver Reviews: Free Agent Formula 1 Racer Shines with Outstanding Performance
Formula 1 correspondent for Crash.net, Connor McDonagh, evaluates the drivers' performances at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen – 10
Verstappen consistently proves to be invaluable for Red Bull, showcasing his exceptional skills once again in Barcelona, despite not having the fastest vehicle.
Lando Norris – 8.5
Considering McLaren boasted the quickest vehicle during the event, it's challenging to concur with the audience's choice of Norris as the driver of the day. Although his qualifying lap was impressive, he fell short in crucial Sunday moments, both at the beginning and later when navigating through congestion.
Lewis Hamilton – 9
Certain circuits seem to be Hamilton's forte, with Barcelona standing out as a prime example. After achieving third place in qualifying, he managed to secure his first podium finish of the year, overcoming an initially sluggish beginning.
George Russell – 8
Russell kicked off with a remarkable maneuver reminiscent of Alonso, overtaking both Norris and Verstappen by going wide to seize the forefront. However, Russell’s pace during the race didn't quite match up to Hamilton's. Despite the lack of strategic differences, the seven-time world champion maintained a superior performance.
Charles Leclerc – 8.5
Leclerc found his rhythm late, surpassing Sainz in the final qualifying session. He demonstrated seasoned skill to secure fifth place, managing his tyres effectively throughout the race.
Carlos Sainz – 7.5
Sainz aimed for an assertive performance in front of his home crowd, yet despite his efforts, he could only secure a sixth-place finish.
Oscar Piastri – 6
Piastri had a disappointing weekend, with his opportunities dashed by a mistake in the last few turns of qualifying. Despite climbing back to seventh position, this performance fell short of expectations, especially given that he had the top car in Barcelona.
Sergio Perez – 5.5
Perez faced ongoing challenges midway through the season during the Spanish race. While he made it into Q3, the grid penalty from the previous race inevitably placed him at a disadvantage.
Pierre Gasly – 9
Beyond Verstappen, Gasly undoubtedly shone brightest this weekend. He showcased his skills in qualifying and followed up with an impressive race performance. If not for a delayed pit stop, he would have crossed the finish line before Perez.
Esteban Ocon – 7.5
Lagging slightly behind Gasly, Ocon managed to secure a point, marking a commendable weekend for Alpine.
Nico Hulkenberg – 7
Given that Haas didn't stand a chance at scoring points in Barcelona, Hulkenberg delivered a skillful performance to end up in 11th place.
Fernando Alonso – 6.5
Regrettably, while racing on his own ground, Aston Martin didn't stand a chance. They lacked speed and seemed to be repeating their previous year's struggles in evolving their car.
Zhou Guanyu – 6
Switching to a new chassis allowed Zhou to reach Q2 for the first time this year. He received a standard strategy compared to his teammate Bottas, enabling him to compete among the midfield racers.
Lance Stroll – 6
Fell short of matching Alonso's performance during a weekend when Aston Martin appeared unlikely to secure any points.
Daniel Ricciardo scored a 6.5
It was an unexpectedly lackluster event for Red Bull, seeing as their recent improvements haven't shown much impact yet. Nonetheless, Ricciardo managed to put in a decent performance during the race.
Valtteri Bottas – 6.5
Bottas showcased exceptional skill during the qualifying rounds, maintaining his lead over Zhou with a 10-0 record in their direct comparisons. However, the strategy Sauber opted for was surprisingly poor.
Kevin Magnussen – 5.5
A premature start dashed Magnussen's hopes for a strong race performance.
Alex Albon – 6.5
This was Williams' most challenging weekend of the season, as they were clearly the team trailing behind everyone else in Barcelona.
Yuki Tsunoda – 5.5
Tsunoda's race was marred by chaos, incurring a penalty for exceeding the speed limit in the pit lane.
Logan Sargeant – 5
Lagging behind and unnoticed. Sargeant and Williams experienced a forgettable weekend.
