Verstappen Dominates Rain-Soaked Belgian GP Practice as Stroll Crashes at Eau Rouge
Max Verstappen leads the final rain-soaked practice session in Belgium, while Lance Stroll experiences a major accident at Eau Rouge.
Max Verstappen led the way in a shortened, rain-hit last practice session at the F1 Belgian Grand Prix, where Lance Stroll experienced a crash.
The driver from Red Bull crossed the finish line 1.4 seconds ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri amid rainy conditions, while Pierre Gasly secured the third-fastest time for Alpine, trailing by 1.6 seconds.
Current world titleholder Verstappen is set to start 10 places back in the upcoming Sunday race due to surpassing his season's quota for power unit usage.
The lap times weren't truly indicative as the drivers were just beginning to adjust to the track conditions when the session was disrupted by a significant crash involving Stroll at Eau Rouge.
The driver of the Aston Martin lost control of the car's back end while navigating the curve, resulting in a spin and a collision with the wall on the inside.
Stroll's vehicle endured considerable harm to its front left side, however, the Canadian driver emerged from the situation without injuries, triggering the display of red flags.
Conditions deteriorated at Spa-Francorchamps, with the weather taking a turn for the worse, leading to heavier rainfall while the red flag was out. The track was briefly declared clear for racing, but it wasn't long before the red flags were waved again due to further worsening of the weather.
Lando Norris secured the fourth position, followed closely by Esteban Ocon in the second Alpine car and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.
Before his crash, Stroll had achieved the seventh quickest lap, followed by Valtteri Bottas in eighth position driving for Sauber, with Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes and Sergio Perez of Red Bull trailing behind.
Daniel Ricciardo of RB came back to the pit area after completing just four laps due to an issue he experienced with his steering wheel.
