Valtteri Bottas Sets Realistic Goals for Audi’s Ambitious 2026 F1 Entry Amidst Tough Competition
Valtteri Bottas candidly outlines his ambitious goal for Audi's debut in 2026, acknowledging the challenge of competing against well-established manufacturers in the sport.
Valtteri Bottas believes that winning a grand prix is an overly ambitious goal for Audi in their debut Formula 1 season.
He is confident that the new project will be able to earn points consistently throughout its first year.
Nico Hulkenberg is the sole driver confirmed for Sauber for the upcoming year as the team transitions into Audi, the prominent German automaker, who plans to make a significant impact in 2026.
Bottas is optimistic about continuing to team up with Hulkenberg.
Audi's involvement is scheduled to coincide with the introduction of the new Formula 1 engine rules.
Bottas shared with Sky Sports that he anticipates next year will continue to be challenging.
"There won't be any miraculous outcomes. It's not feasible to invest an enormous amount of effort into the year 2025 due to the significant transformations anticipated for 2026."
Based on my observations, Audi has the potential to compete effectively in 2026. However, achieving this will be challenging.
"Entering a new sport and competing with well-established manufacturers is challenging."
"The year 2026 holds potential, but aiming for an immediate victory is unlikely. This is the challenging truth."
"Based on my observations, it's entirely feasible for a new team to consistently score."
"This is merely conjecture and supposition."
Bottas shared the reasons behind his optimism, citing the rule changes, Audi's financial commitment to the project, and the team involved.
Currently, Sauber is positioned at the rear of the lineup.
In 2024, the team stands as the sole F1 competitor yet to score a point, with both Bottas and his teammate Zhou Guanyu facing ongoing difficulties.
Bottas expressed his outlook for the remainder of the year by stating, "I don't anticipate any miraculous changes. We have some improvements scheduled for October."
"I'm not anticipating anything drastic, but there is room for progress."
"It will be challenging to score this year."
For someone like Bottas, who has both experience and a strong reputation, finishing a season without scoring any points would not reflect well on his resume.
"Clearly, that would be negative," he remarked.
"I'm not familiar with the history, but it's rare for so many teams to experience this."
"If I consider the total points I've accumulated throughout my career, it presents a challenge."
"Regrettably, the chances are dwindling with each passing weekend."
