Valtteri Bottas Eyed for Remarkable Mercedes Comeback in 2025 Amidst Uncertain Driver Line-Up
Valtteri Bottas rumored for an unexpected comeback to Mercedes: "They seek a one-year contract driver"
Is Valtteri Bottas poised for a dramatic comeback with Mercedes in 2025?
1997 Formula One champion Jacques Villeneuve has suggested that Valtteri Bottas could be heading back to Mercedes on a single-year contract for the 2025 season.
Mercedes has yet to determine who will join George Russell as a teammate following the unexpected move of Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari.
Emerging talent Andrea Kimi Antonelli is reportedly leading the pack, while Toto Wolff is optimistic about convincing Max Verstappen to switch from Red Bull.
Carlos Sainz's name has come up, but it seems improbable that the Ferrari driver at present would be interested in a one-year contract.
Bottas has now been added to the list of names.
After a five-year tenure at Mercedes, Bottas transitioned to Sauber in 2022.
The Finnish driver steered the Sauber team, competing as Alfa Romeo, to their highest championship position of sixth in 2022, thanks to a series of impressive performances at the start of the season.
Since that time, the team based in Switzerland has faced challenges in progressing, leading to a decline in their competitive ranking.
During a discussion on Sky Sports F1, Villeneuve suggested that Bottas might move back to Mercedes, allowing Antonelli to start his career with a less prominent team.
When inquired about his perspective on the driver landscape for the 2025 Formula 1 season, Villeneuve proposed: “Sainz might find a spot at Williams. Haas seems unattractive to most; however, those left without options will likely seize any opportunity there. It appears Bottas might move to Mercedes. They're in the market for a one-year contract driver. So, whom do they choose? They opt for someone willing to accept a short-term contract, familiar with the team, brings experience, and can pave the way for Antonelli.”
"Consequently, Toto will be required to finance a group to accommodate Antonelli for an annual period."
Karun Chandhok later commented, "In my opinion, Ollie Bearman is likely to join Haas. The team holds him in high regard. The competition for the other seat is still open, but Ocon is available. I believe Bottas and Zhou are also contenders, so it could be one of them.
"The concept from Jacques intrigues me – it's new to me, specifically the Bottas aspect. Perhaps you have insights that aren't common knowledge?"
Villeneuve summed up, saying, "Absolutely not. It's merely an intuition."
