Ursula von der Leyen ist nun in ihrer zweiten Amtszeit als Präsidentin der Europäischen Kommission. Ihre erste Wahl durch die Parlamentarier fand im Juli 2019 statt.
The current composition of the parliament includes 719 members, meaning a majority requires 360 votes. The voting was conducted in secret via ballot paper. Ursula von der Leyen received the backing of 401 members, while 284 voted against her, and there were 22 ballots that were either blank or invalid.
Before the vote, Ursula von der Leyen outlined her political guidelines for the next five years during a debate with the members of parliament.
The Upcoming Steps
The newly elected President of the Commission will soon send formal letters to the heads of state and government of the member countries, asking them to nominate their candidates for the positions of EU Commissioners. Following the summer break, the Parliament will hold hearings for these candidates in the relevant committees. The entire team of Commissioners must ultimately receive approval from the Parliament. Additional details can be found in the Parliament's press kit.
