Driver Ratings for the US Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton Receives His Lowest Rating of the 2024 F1 Season

Which drivers excelled during the 2024 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix weekend?

Charles Leclerc – 9

Leclerc delivered an outstanding performance to secure his third Formula 1 win of the season. He excelled right from the start, overtaking three competitors to seize the lead. After that, he maintained his position without faltering.

Carlos Sainz – 8.5

Sainz delivered one of his best performances of the season during this weekend. In the sprint race, he was particularly impressive, executing remarkable moves to overtake Leclerc and Norris. Even after an early visit to the pit, his speed on the hard tires was exceptional, contributing to another 1-2 finish for Ferrari.

Max Verstappen – 9.5

In Austin, Verstappen fully utilized the capabilities of the RB20. He effortlessly secured victory in the sprint race and subsequently achieved a podium finish in the main grand prix event. Demonstrating exceptional defensive skills, he successfully held off Norris for several laps.

Lando Norris – 8

Norris showcased his exceptional speed, particularly with his initial lap in Q3 on Saturday. Despite this, errors during the sprint and hesitation when confronting Verstappen, both on the first lap and in their subsequent duel, led to him finishing as the runner-up in the title race in Austin.

Oscar Piastri – 7

Piastri didn't quite have what it took to compete for a podium finish in Austin. He described the race as "boring," reflecting on his experience in the event.

George Russell – 6.5

George Russell impressed during the sprint qualifying, securing a spot on the front row of the grid. However, that was the peak of his performance as Mercedes struggled afterward. Russell's challenges continued when he had an accident in Q3, which resulted in him starting from the pit lane. Despite this setback, he managed to climb back to finish in sixth place, but overall, it was a somewhat disorganized weekend for him.

Sergio Perez earned a rating of 5.5. In 2024, his weekends typically involve lackluster performances, with him seldom appearing near the lead in the standings.

Nico Hulkenberg – 7

In the regular qualifying session, Hulkenberg was unable to take advantage of Haas' speed due to two errors in Q2. However, a clever strategy and impressive race pace on Sunday allowed him to compensate for a disappointing Saturday, resulting in another finish within the points.

Liam Lawson – 8

Lawson's ability during qualifying was not fully visible due to a 60-place grid penalty he received for installing a new engine. However, the New Zealander demonstrated his skill during the race by effectively utilizing RB's strategic plan to extend his stint with a beneficial tire arrangement.

Franco Colapinto – 8

Colapinto remains impressive in his performance with Williams. He surpassed Albon during the sprint qualifying and came close to overtaking the Thai competitor on Saturday. After the race, the Argentine driver shared that he had urged Williams to begin the race on hard tires, a choice that was key to securing a spot within the top 10.

Kevin Magnussen – 7.5

Magnussen had one of his best performances of the season. He made a rare appearance in Q3, though the two-stop strategy didn't work to his advantage.

Pierre Gasly – 7.5

Gasly shone brightly during the qualifying session, earning the seventh position with his improved Alpine car. However, much like Magnussen, his race was hindered by strategic decisions.

Fernando Alonso – Score: 7.5

Fernando Alonso exceeded expectations by advancing the Aston Martin into the third qualifying session at the Circuit of the Americas. Unfortunately, during the race, he lost positions, though this was not due to his own actions.

Yuki Tsunoda – 6.5

Despite being frustrated with Red Bull's strategy, Tsunoda's chances of scoring points were dashed when he spun at the first turn. He had the pace, but things just didn't align for him.

Lance Stroll – 6

Lance Stroll had a quiet weekend, falling behind Alonso in terms of speed.

Alex Albon – 4

Albon faced one of his toughest weekends with Williams. During SQ1, he spun out and barely managed to outpace his rookie teammate, Colapinto, in the regular qualifying session. In the race, he got caught up in a first-lap crash with Ocon, causing damage to his car.

Valtteri Bottas – 6.5

Bottas maintained his strong performance by outperforming his teammate Zhou in qualifying for all but one race this season. Despite the Sauber being the slowest vehicle on the track, he held his ground in the middle of the pack, although this wasn't sufficient for breaking into the top 10.

Esteban Ocon – 6.5

At first glance, Ocon was significantly slower than his teammate Gasly in Austin. It's important to note, though, that the ex-Force India driver is using a version of the car designed for the Chinese Grand Prix in April. Despite this, he managed to secure the fastest lap.

Zhou Guanyu – 5.5

Zhou managed to stay nearer to Bottas than he typically does, even without utilizing all the new enhancements. When Bottas was involved in the chaos of the first lap, Zhou advanced in the standings. Unfortunately, his progress was reversed due to a spin.

Lewis Hamilton – 3

Hamilton experienced a challenging weekend. He was poised to secure pole position during the sprint qualifying, but his efforts were thwarted by yellow flags, which derailed his plans. In the sprint race, he found himself with little room to maneuver and eventually did not advance past Q1. Furthermore, he spun out during the initial laps of the main race.
