Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer and Scottish First Minister John Swinney have both expressed their willingness to cover the cost if they encountered a parent in financial distress shoplifting infant formula.

The Big Issue inquired whether the primary party leaders would step in upon witnessing incidents in stores.

A Sky News report last year first brought attention to the overlooked issue of families facing difficulties in purchasing baby formula.

This resulted in grocery stores reducing their prices and prompted an inquiry by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) into claims that baby formula producers were unfairly profiting at the expense of parents in the UK.

The Big Issue engaged with leaders of various parties, questioning their plans for assistance.

Conservative leader Rishi Sunak and Liberal Democrat chief Sir Ed Davey mentioned they would emphasize additional financial assistance measures to a family finding it difficult to pay for infant formula.

"Sir Keir Starmer stated, 'I would be willing to cover the cost.'"

"He also stated that the plight of families nationwide ought to bring nothing but disgrace to the Tories."

"Indeed, shoplifting poses a significant issue for retailers, which is why we plan to introduce an additional 13,000 neighborhood police officers to enhance security and peace of mind in our commercial areas."

"We would also modify the regulations to allow individuals to purchase infant formula using food bank vouchers and loyalty card points."

Sunak pledges support for parents if Conservatives win again

Mr. Sunak conveyed to the Big Issue, "Shoplifting harms more than just the perpetrator; it impacts store owners too, and we are committed to aiding them in theft prevention. Additionally, we are dedicated to assisting families in managing living expenses."

Sir Ed stated, "I would definitely attempt to convince [the parent] otherwise. It would be ideal to seek alternative assistance for them."

Mr. Swinney, the leader of the SNP, stated: "I would quietly propose to cover the costs because no parent should ever be confronted with this scenario.

"Unfortunately, this situation is all too real. Every week, I have discussions with my constituents and others throughout Scotland who are dealing with these severe difficulties."

Infant nutrition expert and creator of Feed UK, Dr. Erin Williams, expressed to Sky News, "It demonstrates genuine empathy, and it appears they truly understand… they realize the gravity of the situation for many families.

Should Keir Starmer find himself at 10 Downing Street in the near future, it's crucial that he swiftly fulfills his commitments and strives diligently to prevent situations that put parents in difficult circumstances.

"There must be a significant political emphasis on the factors causing families to face such difficulties, encompassing issues like welfare, employment stability, and beyond."

Last fall, the World Health Organization informed Sky News that formula milk producers were charging UK families excessively high prices.

Manufacturers previously attributed a 25% increase in prices to elevated production expenses, denying any exploitation of parents.

The Competition and Markets Authority is in the process of investigating claims of excessive profit-making and expects to release its conclusions later in the year.
