Triumph Over Tribulation: Lewis Hamilton Discusses Mental Health Journey and Emotional British GP Victory
Lewis Hamilton discusses battling mental health issues following his 2021 F1 championship defeat
Lewis Hamilton shares the psychological difficulties he encountered following his contentious loss of the F1 2021 championship.
Lewis Hamilton has openly discussed the challenges he faced with his mental well-being as he sought to overcome the contentious defeat he suffered in the 2021 F1 championship.
The seven-time world champion secured his first Formula 1 win in close to three years – his inaugural victory since the controversial conclusion of the 2021 season in Abu Dhabi, where he narrowly lost the opportunity for a record eighth world title to Max Verstappen – during Sunday's British Grand Prix.
Since the implementation of new rules in 2022, Mercedes has faced challenges in maintaining its competitive edge. Although George Russell, Hamilton's teammate, has managed to secure two victories during this period, Hamilton had not been able to increase his impressive count of 103 wins until achieving a thrilling victory in a dramatic race at Silverstone that fluctuated between wet and dry conditions.
In response to a question about whether his unprecedented ninth victory at the British Grand Prix was the crucial element in overcoming the disputes that marred 2021, Hamilton shared with reporters, including Crash.net, "It's something that only the future can reveal. What I am certain of is that I'm not throwing in the towel.
"I believe I'm choosing wisely in terms of how I organize my life, plan my schedule, and manage my time. For instance, the choices I've made for the upcoming year, the ongoing dedication I have towards this team, and the passion I continue to hold for my work and this team."
"I absolutely adore my profession. There's nothing else that could ever match it, and I feel immensely fortunate to be one of the 20 drivers participating in this wonderful sport during such a significant period."
"Frankly, upon my return in 2022, I believed I had moved on, but I realized I hadn't, and healing from that has definitely been a lengthy process. It's a common response for anyone who has gone through something similar. I've been focusing on personal growth and seeking tranquility on a daily basis."
Hamilton disclosed that throughout his 945-day period before achieving victory again, he encountered multiple challenges regarding his mental well-being.
"Hamilton described the sensation as distinct from past competitions, especially those involving back-to-back races or seasons filled with numerous victories."
"I believe that the obstacles we've encountered as a group, and the difficulties I've personally faced, those hurdles, the perpetual test we all face to rise each day and put forth our utmost effort."
There are numerous occasions when it feels like your utmost effort falls short, leading to feelings of letdown. We exist in an era where mental health is a grave concern, and I must admit, I've encountered it myself.
"Undoubtedly, there were times when it felt like the end, like it would never occur once more. Thus, experiencing this sensation as I crossed the finish line was truly unique for me. Honestly, I've never shed tears after a victory before. The emotions just overflowed. It's an incredibly wonderful feeling. I'm truly thankful for it."
