Sir Keir Starmer expressed that he had always doubted Boris Johnson's integrity with the truth, predicting it would lead to his downfall. He disclosed how he strategically "laid a trap" for the former prime minister amid the partygate scandal.
In a discussion with The Guardian, the Labour Party's leader expressed indifference to the derogatory comments directed at him by Mr. Johnson during parliamentary exchanges, even when the former Prime Minister labeled him a "pointless human bollard."

"He didn't claim to possess profound understanding, but he expressed to the newspaper his belief that the man's character would ultimately lead to his downfall."
"It seemed to me, here was a person who was disconnected from reality. To him, whether he was being truthful or deceptive was irrelevant."
Sir Keir outlined his strategic maneuver to expose Mr. Johnson amidst the controversy regarding the parties at Downing Street, as reported by The Guardian.
He stated, "When I initially questioned him, asking 'Did you follow all the regulations?' I wasn't aware of the video featuring Allegra [Stratton, the director of strategic communications at the time]."
"He learned about her laughter when questioned, 'What's the word on the parties?' So I mentioned to my crew, 'There seems to be a story here. Let’s capture his statement. He’s likely to fabricate.'"
The ex-chief prosecutor noted, "It was a process we unraveled over several months. My focus wasn't so much on his words to me as it was on meticulously documenting his statements. Ultimately, it proved worthwhile. His deception forced him to resign from parliament."
In December 2021, Ms. Stratton stepped down following the release of a video in which she appeared to joke about a Christmas gathering at Downing Street held during a period when strict COVID-19 restrictions were in place in London.
Mr. Johnson managed to hold on to his position for an additional seven months, barely overcoming a vote of no confidence initiated by anger among his party members over repeated violations of rules at Downing Street.
Mr. Johnson, along with his wife Carrie and the then-Chancellor Rishi Sunak, were among 83 individuals penalized for attending gatherings in Downing Street that violated lockdown measures during the pandemic, a time when strict social distancing rules were in place across the country.

The controversy surrounding Mr. Johnson had already put him in a precarious position when the Chris Pincher incident came to light, leading to a flurry of resignations that eventually led to his downfall.
A Commons inquiry later determined that Mr. Johnson intentionally misled Members of Parliament regarding the partygate scandal, a finding that prompted his resignation from parliament, where he alleged he was the target of a "witch-hunt."
The ex-Conservative chief has consistently refuted claims that he deceived fellow party members about the gatherings, maintaining that he genuinely thought "all rules were adhered to" when he made that statement.
