Steiner Sounds Alarm on Horner’s Future at Red Bull Amid Performance Dip and Verstappen’s Uncertain Horizon
Guenther Steiner warns Christian Horner he could be at risk
"Your position becomes precarious once the victories cease."
Guenther Steiner has cautioned Christian Horner that his position at Red Bull could be at risk if their performance doesn't get better.
Steiner, previously associated with Red Bull and more famously recognized as the ex-principal of the Haas team, has observed Horner's challenges this season from a position beyond the F1 pit lane.
Horner underwent a probe into his conduct that ultimately cleared him, prior to a decline in his performances on the track.
Steiner acknowledges that his position with the team will be under review if he fails to stabilize the situation.
"Definitely. Success validates your actions," Steiner remarked on the Red Flags podcast.
"When your victories come to an end, you become susceptible."
"The protective layer of your bullet-resistant vest becomes increasingly slim."
"If additional shots are fired, defending oneself becomes challenging after a certain point."
McLaren has overtaken Red Bull at the top of the constructors' championship standings and appears poised to secure the championship title.
Max Verstappen maintains a 52-point lead over the currently high-performing Lando Norris in the drivers' rankings.
Verstappen is expected to stay with Red Bull for the next season, as the lineup for the 2025 Formula 1 drivers is nearly completed.
Nonetheless, what lies ahead for him beyond 2026 remains a point of contention.
Despite his commitment to Red Bull through 2028, it's rumored that Mercedes and Aston Martin have shown interest in him.
"Steiner believes he'll end up with Mercedes, though he acknowledges he has other choices."
"He's expected to be with Mercedes by 2026."
Toto Wolff has openly expressed his respect for Verstappen, yet he maintains that his choice of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli for the 2025 team is a long-term decision.
However, Wolff and Horner have clashed due to remarks made regarding Russell's career prospects.
Horner mentioned that Russell could potentially catch Red Bull's attention down the line.
"Undoubtedly, there's a fair amount of poking happening," Steiner commented. "However, you don't get smoke without some underlying cause.
"If Max departs, Christian will require a leading driver. Without a doubt, George is one of those options."
